I am trying to finish up my first rather simple project using Cycles 2.66a. If anyone can offer advice or direct me to tutorials, I’d greatly appreciate it.
This scene was constructed using 18 different colored “thread spool” objects using DupliFace. I offset the spools slightly on X and Y axises by selected each parent object and moving it. But I also want to offset the spools along the Z-Axis significantly for a more realistic look (since in reality, the thread spools are strung onto ball chain in my thread spool installations).

Is there a way to select an entire column of Children from different Parents at the same time (various colors)? so I can move an entire column of “thread spool” up or down?
-
I’m also having a couple of Newbie Issues: My Parent objects are appearing when the viewport is set to Render mode? Is that supposed to happen or do I have an extra Child at the original location of each Parent.

When I hit the render button (vs 3D viewport render), my objects appear as Solid vs. rendered with Materials. I assume I need to change something in my Render settings?
Any advice would be appreciated!
