Durian Sprint: Character Modeling Feedback

effstops: thanks ).

Hair no uv and texture. I think it is better to use a “hair system of particles”. This hair, that these would not have been bald head. )

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll try to work more on the details. About the boxiness/unsmoothness think it’s mostly due to blenders crappy default viewport lighting. I have model straightly from perspective view without any reference in blender so that shouldn’t be a problem. but I’ll keep that in mind and get back to you with an improved/better lit model!

@ Dimetrii – I don’t know what the brief from the Durian team is, but is a variety of body-types allowed? It might keep the females from looking too clone-like, something that might be noticed in a scene with a number of figures.

chipmasque: Women of different heights. Various forms of the head. Different clothes and hairstyles. Where are the clones?

Different clothes & somewhat different hairstyles will help make each different, of course. Relative height is hard to judge from the images shown. But to notice the differences in face/head shape, which are small, takes some close looking, which in a group scene isn’t likely for the “extras.” The body form seems identical. Perhaps some obviously slimmer and obviously heftier variations, including not-quite-so-beautiful faces? What you’ve shown is excellent work but all together they look, if not like clones, then definitely sisters of one another, because of the very close resemblances.

EDIT: Various ages might be good as well.

chipmasque: you’ve seen sketches “Women” ( http://durian.blender.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/03-Ishtarians-women-.jpg)?

I, of course, correcting women’s faces.

That’s all very well and good, but if you’re trying to portray a general population, all the women should not be highly attractive 20-somethings (or younger). The model sheet is a departure point in most cases. The site mentions under “Character List”

  • young or old, maybe primarily women doing the buying

The variety of shapes and ages seen in the “Other” Character sheet would be well-applied to the women and children as well, if the intent is to portray a living community’s population.

Another work in progress update for the Man variation C Guard person type thing. So many folds in fabric… Still plenty of belts and buckles to add.

Let me know what you think, also do you want this textured? if so any particular you want in terms of texturing?

Enjoy!

Well, I agree with that. Sintel probably has a village similar to the Beauty and Beast village from Disney. They certainly had all looks and sizes. Very few, in fact were Belle-like – which made her stand out by contrast.

Of course… that being said… it doesn’t mean that Dimetrii can’t specialize in a certain body type, and leave the rest to someone else… that is why the whole community is participating… Or at least that’s the way I see it…

It was just a suggestion of a way to increase variety. I’m trying to work on a “matronly” type myself, but am having the dickens of a time with the Sculpt tool in 2.50a2, it keeps just quitting on me. May downshift to 2.49b for the modeling.

Hey guys, great stuff! After midnight here and still at the studio so I gotta make this short.

Just wanted to pipe up and say I absolutely agree with chipmasque and MarkJoel60. Variety is key for this scene, as it is our only indication of what the city Sintel’s living in is really like. And I agree, the more exaggerated character designs we throw in there, the better they will contrast with our lead, and I think that’s pretty important. The Beauty and the Beast screenshots are great reference!

So right now I think we’re dealing with an overrepresentation of beautiful slender young women. :stuck_out_tongue: I admit that this is partially due to David’s concepts – they weren’t quite as varied in body type and age as they could’ve been. Dimetrii- your models are beautiful, of course! Keep a version of what you have, but how bout having a go at one of them with some lattices and a bit of topology tweaking. I’d be interested to see how far you can push it!

Gustav - Nice improvements to your boy model!

And for Tea_Monster, who I somehow skipped yesterday, those models are looking great! Really awesome work. You planning on doing any materials or textures?

Later.

Ok, now I got the Durian bug! Sheesh.

How’s this for a “matronly” type? A little better off than the norm maybe but still shops the markets with everyone else. No shoes/boots or accessories yet, until there’s a go-ahead on the persona.

Comments are highly welcome.

Right, I think I have finished modelling, but I would like some feed back from the team as to weather there is anything you would like changing before I think about texturing. Any info on how you want texturing done?

Enjoy!

Dimitrii how do you make those models so quickly O.o That looks great!

I’ve tried several times to upload my religious man model now, but it just won’t. I think the file is too large, because of the textures. What should I do?

Fat man from “04 Others” “a” model-sheet. Intentionally went for a weird feminine look. Have to add shoes and teeth. Let me know if anything needs to be tweaked or added. I’ll merge the clothes mesh into the skin mesh for the submit.
