Dust Impact - improvements please

Attached is my first attempt of a dust cloud appearing on impact of a large object.

I have a few concerns that I can’t work out how to change:

  1. some of the particles fly off in a line even tho emit is set to FACE
  2. the speed of the cloud is constant. I want it to decelerate fast then dissolve
  3. not sure how to create a realistic dust material. At the moment it is grey with no specularity and semi-transparent but the edges are too sharp
