[DVD: Blender Game Engine Zero to Hero]--[Progress thread]

Hi
I was working in the past 2 months with a Co-author [Matthew aka Mokazon] on the pre-production of a DVD

a DVD named
“Blender Game Engine Zero to Hero” “volume 1: starting small”

http://www.brainmeal.net/DVD/Syllabus.jpg

here goes the initial version of the Syllabus, download , you know the layout needs work, and the readability with the background and stuff

the PDF contains the course details
the projects are
-3D Labyrinth
-Pong “online game”
-Rainbow tower
-Dancing game

so what is your first impression about this work, I started recording videos yesterday, and feel confident enough to post this thread.

PS: I suggest you do Email subscription to this thread, to have news when they are out.

It looks pretty good. It’s good that you cover Python in the BGE, as well, as that really opens up the range of possibilities using the BGE. You don’t have to install Python to use Python in the BGE, I don’t think, and there’s some capitalization errors in the syllabus, but it’s very nice. Good job!

How much? I’m quite inexperienced with the game engine, so this would be perfect for me. You got a release date?

thanks SolarLune.

You got a release date?

Before the end of September.

How much?

you will know by then.

Sweet… keep us posted.

news: a test tutorial on a different topic

I made an experimental tutorial to test my recording Quality, so I make the best tuts for the DVD

Test Tutorial Topic: Making Abstractish Art
Tutorial Screenshot:

Download link: Direct-Download

why I did this tutorial?
to take feedback from people on IRC Channel so they give me tips, I got with these conclusions

1- I need to buy an expensive microphone so I have almost no noise [using audacity/other software is tedious and is going to kill a lot of time]
2- I need to prepare some rough text before recording, or some notes for things that need to be covered.
3- I need to adhire to the English Accent more than that.
and more, so this test tutorial was made to have some tips on all the tutorials I’m going to produce for this DVD.
& more stuff.

news: playing with rigify
I learned more advanced rigify and I must say I like it, I will be using it for rigging the robot.

this is all for today.

I will keep you updated with news  << feel like a reporter lol.

edit: I suggest you make an Email Subscription to this topic too, from thread tools

Having a quick look, I’d say it looks ok so far. Sorry, just ok. I’m not judging the concepts or info to be presented; I’m simply judging the clarity of the layout and the graphic design of the pdf.

  1. Do not write the English text yourself - no offense - your English is better than my non-existent Jordanian. But if you want to create a pro product for sale, you need a native English speaker to write the text. I will gladly do this for a small per page fee. I am an outstanding writer, with access to professional writers.

  2. The design is cluttered, with non-existent margins. The text is all very large, and the eye does not know where to look. There is no hierarchy in the text layout (heading, sub-heading, paragraph text, etc), which would aid in comprehension.

I have spoken to you, and I know you are quite knowledgeable. If you intend to sell this project, potential buyers may cite your lack of documented GE experience, as well as that of Mokazon’s (I’ve not seen a complete game from either of you, or a portfolio of GE work.)

I don’t mean to be harsh here, but in all honesty, potential customers will want proof that you guys are experts, before handing over cash. Endi and Haidme are well established GE experts with long track records, to name a few. I know Solarlune to be quite skilled with scripts, and of course Martinsh is a master of filters, among other things. No offense to others out there whom I’ve neglected to mention.

People would buy a GE tut from Haidme and those others I’ve mentioned. I’ve seen tons of requests for them in fact. How can you establish yourself as a GE expert, before offering your product for sale? How can you generate some interest in yourselves as GE masters? I ask these questions because I hope you do well in this venture. Andrew Price established himself as a solid tutorial creator, before asking people to spend money on his products.

I assume that you will be selling this, as that’s what you told me when we spoke, and you showed me your videos on Skype.

Yes, I absolutely meant it as constructive. You are a good guy, and I wish you well. I just didn’t see any point at all in telling you it was perfect, or glossing over it, providing only compliments. I know you research your work - that was clear from my 1 hour conversation with you. I know you are detail oriented. Your focus on specific things is great - you don’t blunder through things, focusing only on certain aspects. I was impressed by your thorough coverage of the subject (glass materials I believe it was.)

I have written professionally for Custommade.com and Finewoodworking.com, as a contributor of articles focused on custom furniture business marketing:

http://www.finewoodworking.com/item/35611/a-paradigm-shift-part-1

There are more, but as you won’t read all of those, there’s no point in cluttering this thread. A side not: I did not pick the images that went with the article - some editor did that.

3dmedieval: Take a look at these:

As far as art goes - I do mostly programming and leave the art to people who are better than me, however, I still am pretty good at art, 3d, realtime, drawing, painting, etc. Here:

Is that enough for you? :stuck_out_tongue:

Is that enough for you?

It’s not for me. I won’t be buying the book (no offense). I’m a game artist, and don’t really care that much about learning programming etc. I simply suggested that you qualify yourselves as experts. Most (successful) people who sell tutorials spend lots of time doing that.

I can tell you both were a bit offended for some reason. Fine - better to be offended now, and think about what I’ve written, than to have a good, well deserved cry when no one buys your book. People want to learn from masters of their craft. That’s a fact, and that’s all I’m saying. Are you a master of your craft? Prove it to your potential customers, and they will buy your book. Fail to prove it, and people will say “Well, there’s lots and lots of free tutorials around”.

And yes, you know I’m following your thread. I’ve commented there.

@mokazon
Enough for a begginer like me.
Also how your poject cassandra turned out was quite impressive indeed.
Good luck guys!

news:
-A better microphone that makes almost no noise.
-Hire someone to enhance the PDF.
-Organize files of the project in one place & make a backup of what is made till now.
-Fix more things in the robot character.
-Rigified version of the robot character.
-Write some text for the intro of the DVD & more stuff, a text I read while recording some segments, and refer to it for headlines.
-Find good ways to encode video tutorials in HD.
-More stuff.

news:

  • Starting www.BrainMeal.net as a website that makes tutorials and training courses, with email subscription, download system & more.
** still enhancing it even more.
  • Facebook fanpage with Mattew and myself as the admin.
  • The new layout of the Syllabus is finished, thanks for Claas Kuhnen for lending me a hand.
  • Wrote some more text for the videos of the DVD, so I read them at the start of some video segments.
  • Record a couple of videos.

PS: I made a commercial for a local TV station too in the mean time.

Website looks good, but in your slideshow, you’ve got long text blocks that pop up for only 3-4 seconds -not impossible to read, but impossible for most. Reduce the text to a headline format, or make the slides longer. I vote for reducing the text - people will not read it all anyway - if they are interested, they will click the link, and read the text in the article.

Also, make the links to Facebook etc:

target = “_blank”

So that they open in a new window, I accidentally clicked the FB page, closed it an lost your site. I make all outbound lins on all of my sites open in new windows. Don’t encourage people to leave your site.

Edit: I know, you’ll say everything is beta right now. I know, but that’s the time to get crits, not when it’s done.

Hi, News:
I have recorded more videos of the DVD…
also…
I’m working on some other TV Commercials as a break,…
here goes one of the commercials… haha

PS: thanks again 3dmedieval for the comments, I will fix them soon…

Awesome, I think I’ll cancel my Amazon order for Mike Pan’s book. I don’t think he’s going to ever finish it anyway!! Hope you do.

Hi hasrenderman. Feel free to cancel your amazon order. I understand how disappointing it’s to receive emails from amazon stating that the book got delayed.

On the other hand, if you hold a bit more I can guarantee you that the book is still under strong development. We already have Logic Bricks, Animation, Graphics, Physics, Python and case studies complete (all but case studies with at least 40+ pages + files). I don’t want to clutter ZiauddinMK thread with explanations. So if you want more details or a better explanation of how things are please feel free to pm me.

ZiauddinMK, good luck with your DVDs. As I told you before, I sincerely hope you can delivery a product with the standards you are setting for. The Blender Game Engine seriously lacks professional documentation projects.

News on DVD:-

  • new videos were recorded
  • the new syllabus will be out soon, thanks for Claas Kuhnen for his work on the layout.
  • me and the other author now will focus on the DVD after we harvested the opportunity of making TV Ads.
  • we were asked to add sections on exporting to unity and udk, and we are having a look
    OffTopic News:-
  • a new version of the abstract art tutorial is out… this version almost has no microphone noise -compared to the last version-

note: run it in HD in full screen, I will try to eliminate the black area… soon… still experimenting…

  • the dairies advertisement above is accepted by the local tv channel, and it will be broadcast soon.
  • me and matthew ditel created 2 Ads, both for Jordan Satellite channel, and will get some more small $ hehe…

I think I’ll cancel my Amazon order for Mike Pan’s book. I don’t think he’s going to ever finish it anyway!! Hope you do.
dfelinto [the other author of the book] just clarified it for you, they are still working on it.

ZiauddinMK, good luck with your DVDs. As I told you before, I sincerely hope you can delivery a product with the standards you are setting for. The Blender Game Engine seriously lacks professional documentation projects.
thanks mate, good luck for the two projects, the DVD and the book

News:-

  • we are creating a nice video trailer now for the DVD  , lot’s of fun…
  • two big blender training websites are interested in adopting our DVD, initially.
