Hi,
I am trying to make an animation of a tree getting crystallized.
I did the tree with a skin modifier (to get the form i want) and using an particle system (hair) to create the branches and leaves.
When I do the dynamic paint, my tree gets “painted” but the branches and leafs don’t… i applied canvas to the branches/leafs and same result
I know that I can convert to mesh, but when but PC is horrible and when I convert it, it takes like 2 mins (if it doesn’t crash) to convert it and after it’s done, blender, moves like 1 fps (even the cursor :(( )
Is there a way to make this work without converting everything to mesh?
can you be more clear about what you 're trying to achieve with dynamic paint?
I have those branches (https://i.imgur.com/ma2QCzI.png) placed on a tree with the help of hair particles.
And with dynamic paint I want to change the material of the tree and branches/leafs like this https://youtu.be/AtqobTvTzbA
But dynamic paint doesn’t affects the particles/hair strands
I think you have to find a way to work around it, since is impossible (?) and impractical to use paint map for such effect, given what you said earlier

Depend on the scene, I would try to use other 2D composition trick, by
-rendering an alpha mask for the particle,
-manually make a rough 2D matte of area you want to change color in post with the help of the alpha mask,
-do the color changing effect in compositing step.
p/s: if the material changing is more complex than just color changing, you might have to render 2 versions of the material ([before change] and [after change]), then make a transition from [before change] to [after change] using the created 2D matte mentioned above.
I gave up on coming with a way around it, can’t think of anything, and i have no experiance in composition so… nope…
I changed the animation from being crystallized from an “explosion” to being crystallized from the roots up (absorbing “magic” water or something like that :)) )
Made a brush mesh for the body of the tree and a brush for the source mesh for branches
i got something like this: https://youtu.be/vCVFsq89D88
i need to tweak the hair system for a better branch arrangement and the materials
