Dytopo Moutain Troll

Hi all, this is my recent project using dynamic topology. It is sort of based on a cave troll from LOTR, but not really. I feel like something is off on his muscles or something. Any one have any ideas. All critiques or thoughts are appreciated! :eyebrowlift2: Click for larger size, rendered in Cycles. 250 samples. Pretty basic material just a glossy BSDF on GGX mixed with another glossy material with a light probe with normal mapping and the world has a sky texture. Hmmm… Maybe not so basic!

your material makes it a little difficult to read the forms, if you can show it in brighter, less glossy material it would be much easier to tell what is going on.

First thing I notice is the neck looks way to thin for a big musclebound hulking monster. The other thing you want to look at is the muscles on the neck. The ones you have sculpted run from the top of the breastbone around the side of the neck to underneath the ear (in this case he doesn’t have one, but that approximate region)

It looks like the mouth/nose region doesn’t protrude enough either. On the pictures I see on google it sticks out quite far, giving it an apelike appearance.

I would say that it just looks a bit angular. I don’t know if you were going for the bulk that the trolls from LOTR have, or trying to stylize it. But that’s the main thing that sticks out to me, is that it should be strong and scary looking, but currently looks a bit emaciated. Personally, I would bulk out the neck, cheek area so that the cheekbones aren’t so well defined, and then really make the forehead area protrude. That will give it a very powerfully built look I think.

Alright here is an update! I changed a couple things and added a lot more minute detail. Around 2 million verts now. And I added some eyes!

Oh yea thanks for posting Sazerac and mrmagicain. Let me clarify that I only used the LOTR cave troll as a vague reference, not really and step by step guide. So all the detail and stuff is all completely different.

Added some more material around the forehead, yes? I like it now, I still don’t think the material is right but obviously that’s not the focus at the moment. I would say that the teeth should come forward a bit, right now the chin looks flabby and takes away from the overall ferocity. Really liking the eyes and the neck!

he has a thin neck, gaunt cheeks and a weak chin which make him resemble a more gollum like creature (to continue to lotr theme). If you want him to look like a big imposing troll you need to beef up some of the underlying forms.

another issue is you have a lot of fine detail, but no mid sized details, like folds/creases around various muscles etc. If you pick a few major lines through the face and emphasise them with creases or more pronounced ridges it would greatly improve things.

I like it. The physiology doesn’t have to be true to life. I think there’s too much symmetry in the face, however. You might want to work separately on either side, around the eyes, under the nose, on the forehead, so that he doesn’t look like he came out a of a mold (unless that’s the look you’re going for).

Thanks guys! Again I am not going for an exact cave troll look so the gaunter face is part of that. I agree Oljebox, I still need to add warts and creases on both sides separately.

Definitelly a cave troll.
