Eagle Scout/Wasp (noob)

i cant seem to get enough of this model… you could do brightly lit top, side and bottom veiws so that People like me could see all of the (spaceship, plane?) model, or you could do it maybe fighting another (spaceship, plane?) in a dogfight

Sure, theyre on their way. I dont have any other models to put with it at the moment and its unarmed so there wont be a dogfight but I will be building some sort of scene around it. Its called an ornithopter by btw, definatly atmospheric.

i have 1 word to say: SWEET!

to be honest, I’m not really liking the materials, it’s making it look like a plastic toy imo, while the first ones which were all white and smooth made me feel like I was watching one of the awesome creatures/ships from one of those old art books my dad has.

I see your point but to me the original ones look pretty uninteresting material wise. I quite like what the SSS does and the dappling but I might try a couple with less specularity and reflection. Also the last four pics have got extra lighting so their bound to look pretty plasticy. Suggestions are welcome if you have any.

Moriquendi

Does this mean that we can officially declare SSS the new “bouncing ball”:mad::mad::mad::spin:

Huh?

Moriquendi

can you give a tip on the halo lighting options
i generally know how it works but i can never seem to get it to look like that
thanks
Appreciate it.
I kinda agree with the bouncing ball
but the model looks great
try creating your textures in photoshop or gimp
add bump maps diffuse maps and scratch maps layered

Umm… Narrow beam ange, low intensity light, high intensity halo, long distance falloff. For this scene the settings are;

Dist: 120
Energy: 0.4
RGB: 0.7,0.7,0.7

SpotSi: 19.53
SpotBl: 1.0
HaloInt: 4.0
BufferSize: 3168
Box
Samples: 10
Halostep: 4
Bias: 1.0
Soft: 1.0

Thats pretty much it, the lamp is quite a long way away from the model and the beam is just wider than the model where it is about half way along the beam, if that makes any sense.

Can someone explain the bouncing ball comment please? I dont get it.

Moriquendi

There are some things that are a dead giveaway that some one is a beginner. Depending of the software evolution cycle, these “giveaways” do change in time. Classical examples are, shiny balls, checkerboard, bouncing balls. A few months ago array modifier was one of those. And I think SSS comes a good candidate for the new nominee.

Edit: Forgot to add the “blue background” to the list.

Ah, I thought it might be something like that, Ive said from the start that I’m a beginner, everyone starts somewhere and there will always be things that make you groan and say “Oh not again!”. I like the effect, I haven’t mastered the materials in blender yet so I cant get the effect that I really want, yet, but I will eventually and in doing so I will lean the subtleties of producing a decent material.

If you have any suggestions for what to do about it would be nice to know them.

Moriquendi

You could always go to the other extreme, my way, and focus on modelling. One person doesn’t have to do it all. You can have someone help you with textures. Not everyone here is good at all aspects. Some do mostly rigging, some do animating, some to lights, some do modelling, texturing, sound effects…

Possibly but I dont know anyone good at materials, or who uses blender for that matter.

Moriquendi

You can always ask people to help you here. That’s what forums are for. Or you can even gasp come to #blenderchat on IRC and… oh well, most of the time it’s rather unproductive there, but also some of the best come in there, so you never know.

I do and have asked for help when I need it and many people have been kind enough to give it, you appear not to be.

Moriquendi

I do… long pause stuff…

I like the non-textured version to be honest, but it still looks amazing.

As you’ve decided to take offense in my most sincere advice to you, I’ve got no other remedy but to mark you as a lost case. Don’t expect me to give you any advice in the future.

I only joined this thread since you were not paying attention to what others said and they made entirely sense… but you know, whatever…

http://www.blender.org/download/resources/#c2511
go to material library section

No offense was taken just that your advise seems to be to get someone else to do it rather than any advice on making better materials and since this is, for me, a project to learn on its not very helpful.

Thanks for the materials link darkcgi, it will be very useful.
