Hey guys, this is my second project.
I’m planning on making a render of earth seen from the moon, but I’m having some problems adding the clouds to the earth sphere. Can anyone help me?

C&C welcome…

looking great sofar :o i wouldn’t ad any clouds it is looking way to cool this way.
well i’m a newbie so dont now how to correct it.
keep up the good work
not looking to bad, especially for a second project…a couple of crits though:
as for the cloud issue, i’d recommend getting hold of a cloud map of the earth…you can probly find one on gogle images and map it to a sphere slightly larger than the earth.
keep up the good work

Thanks for the suggestions!
Here’s an image with a cloudmap mapped to the same sphere as all other textures.

I have trouble using another sphere for the clouds because of the material.
At the moment the clouds are mapped to the earthsphere itself, but I want them on a sphere slightly larger than the earth…
I plan to use 3 spheres: one for the earth, one for the clouds and one for the atmosphere effect.
Here’s a link to my blend file:

Good job, but I think the brown atmosphere effect around the edges should be white or blueish-white, not brown. We want this to be pretty earth
m@dcow made a planet with some quite convincing clouds. i think he used a psd with an alpha channel mapped to a slightly larger sphere, combined with a heavily subdivide ring set to a halo material to get the effect. the ring has to be perpindicular to the camera, so you would snap the cursor to the sphere, then add the circle from camera view. to get a texture channel to read an image texture with an alpha channel, just click ‘use alpha’ in texture buttons.
Thanks for the feedback everyone, here’s my best version I can come up with at the moment

And the moon

I hope you like it!

now that is looking quite nice. Some people put a glow around their planets for an atmosphere effect, but it really isn’t that visible from space, so it might be more realistic the way it is. That was the only thing I could think of to consider adding…
holy smokes! :o that is looking awesome!! I do recommend making a slight haze around the edges of earth, not much, but just enoughblur that it is not a razor sharp edge. Man it looks good though!
Thanks for the feedback!
I’ll see what I can do to make the edges a bit more blurry (That’s easy with photoshop but I hate doing postproduction :-))
