Edge Behaviour

Hello,

This is quite a basic question. Ive been looking in the the Internet for an answer but I havent found any…

Take for example I have a plane. I subdivide it and now I have edges inside the plane that, well, divide it. If I move the edge I modify the plane.

Let’s picture another plane. I “Shift+D” one of the edges, and place the new edge inside the plane, dividing it. The plane though is not “divided” like in the first scenario, and if I attempt to move this edge only the edge moves, the plane stays undisturbed where it is, unlike what happens in the first scenario.

My question, is there some way to make this second edge (the one created by duplicating Shift D one of the plane’s existing edges) behave like the one made by subdividing? Merging the duplicated edge with the plane for example?

My modelling workflow would be much faster if this is possible.

Duplicating the edge is not the right way. Simply click ctrl-R to add a loop-cut.

I’m confused as to what you are asking, would a loopcut (ctrl-r) or knife cut work for what you are doing?

Now I have one last doubt. Suppose for example I want to split this object (plane, etc…) with an edge that is not parallel to any of the existing edges. Splitting, cutting, in a tilted direction.

How can that be achieved?

The knife tool . hold K and drag, but its kind of incomplete and makes for sloppy meshes. After the cut you can adjust settings in the tool panel.
