Edge Loops or Split Edge?

When doing a character for posing and (hopefully) animation, when i’m wanting sharp edges on things, like bits of the clothing etc, is it better to use loops or the Edge Split modifier? Obviously the loops give you greater control in that you can slide them around to adjust how sharp things are, but they also increase the face count. beyond that, is it down to preference? does eithr approach have any benefits or drawbacks when it comes to the rendering times etc?


Personally I use loop cut for no other reason than that’s how I learned from the tutorials. Not being an expert by any means, and knowing just enough to be dangerous, I would say that on models you are trying to animate an extra loop cut or two used to sharpen the edge of a shirt is not going to change your performance that much.
