Edges

How do I chunk up the edge in edge settings?

Or even better, how do I do in composite nodes?

Because basically it’s only the outer ones I want to do, I may try to resort to rendering the scene and scaling, but then it’s centre’s of scaling which will become an issue… If you know what I mean!

Currently the image is 3 scenes each with differing edge setting set in the render tabs and composited in another scene. Currently the rocket scene is set to 255! (i’d almost like an edge around the blue caps!)

Any suggestions welcome, and many thanks!

EDIT:

Err, still using 2.49

For outside edges, blur the matte for however thick you want the outline, apply this curve to the resulting grayscale image: 0 -> 0, 128 -> 255, 255 -> 0

Then use that matte as the mix input between a black solid (or whatever color you want the outline to be) and your image.

Here’s a .blend.

Outline.blend (457 KB)

There is a script/addon for Blender, don’t know if you can use it for 2.49 I used it in Blender 2.5x. It’s called Freestyle. Just google for Blender freestyle or look for it at graphicall there should be a build for it
I used it for a comic look. You can change way more things about your outlines than in the normal Blender.

@LazyCoder, out of the box solution, works a treat, many thanks!

I am however getting a weird result around the light side of the moon, it’s sort of going yellow patterned! I’ve tried playing with the differing types of blurs (Mitch and Catrom work slightly better on the first blur, yet thins it, so i’m not sure if that’s why it’s better). The second RGB Curve, if I lessen the gradient, e.g. 45 it hides the yellow but softens the edge overall (I like the crisp!).

Any suggestions or reasoning why?

@DirkH, yes someone else suggested this to me, and I will get around to having a look, however I like solutions which work out the box (even if it’s a bit more work!). Cheers!

I can isolate the issue to the mix node.

If on it’s own I can do it with an alpha over node, but in the whole it covers the background for some reason. I’ve tried using no sky, etc, but no joy!

Because this situation is white, I have bodged it and used a lighten mix…

Hey
Believe me I tried a lot of different settings and tricks to get my comic style scene look good, but in the end Freestyle just worked better. It’s not perfect either, but at least it has some values that can be changed g
I would give it a try before spending more time on fixing problems you propably won’t have with freestyle.

Do you want to make an image, or an animation? Because if you just want to make images, there could be a better solution with external programs and for animations there is no way around freestyle I think. I had problems with the edges in my scene, so I had to use freestyle. I think the problem was, that Blender can’t scale the edges according to the distance to the camera…
