Why cant I go to edit mode in most of my layers?

Hmm… appears i cant go to edit mode with most of my objects… and when such objects were alone in a alayer i couldnt go to edit mode in that layer… Why cant i edit some of my objects!!!
Press ~ to highlight all the layers at once, then select the object you want to edit, then press tab.
