Editing a texture with the paint tool in cycles wont show the paint in the render?

I have a simple jpeg as a base image for terrain. I am then painting over certain sections to customise it (lake beds are brown etc). The paint shows up in the texture view, but when I go to rendered view it doesn’t show up. I have searched everywhere and I couldn’t find an answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you saved the image and then reloaded it
