Eerie Tunnel

This one started outside the tunnel with some sand dunes, but I decided the tunnel was more interesting (and easier).

I’m working on the translucent advertisement panels (might ditch them, I don’t know), but what else can I add besides cars? I’m intimidated to try to model and texture a car

I used some textures from Poliigon and made a few custom paint shaders.

Need to fix a bunch of textures and get the motion blur on the wheels too:

I wouldn’t call it “creepy” but I do think that it’s good, and that the idea of lighted advertisements on the side of a tunnel is probably something that someone’s going to pretty-soon start actually doing. I think they’re an original idea and a good addition that adds a lot of interest (and realism) to the scene, which otherwise could be, well, “any highway tunnel on earth.” The yellow-colored lights at the roadway level look nice, and it’s good to see a tunnel perspective that isnt “bulls-eye.” The tunnel could, I think, quite-believably be more than two lanes wide (and, given the roof topology, probably should be). The “decisive, high-key contrast” in the most recent frame also serves you well – it adds drama, like you’re expecting a race car to zoom through there …

What Sundial said. It’s good, but it’s not creepy. If you want creepy, I’d suggest nixing the daylight at the end of the tunnel, and making the lights yellow and more greasy. Make it look like you’re standing in a pool of light, with darkness all around.

Thanks for the thoughts, Sundialsvc4! I think you’re right about the signs. I was definitely drawing inspiration from Minority Report and Blade Runner. My question would be are the ads distraction? It’s funny you mention a car—I’m currently attempting my first car model. I want a Porsche 911 zooming through, and I also want to do a version where the camera moves with the car so the tunnel gets the motion blur.

Thanks Renzatic! You’re right, not really creepy per se. I guess when I started I was imagining something else. Ever see the movie The Vanishing?

Haha oddly enough, when I started the scene, the lights were a harsh yellow color. I’ll try a few different looks with the lighting.

Updates:

Did the lighting/color scheme change? This definitely feels eerier than before. Moreso on the the longer shot, the closer one actually feels calmer and restful to me. I liked the cyberpunk feel of the advertising panels. With a little grunge I think they’d enhance the mood you’ve got going here.

Potential additions could include grunge, puddles, debris/trash, and/or plant overgrowth. Only if you’re going for “used future” type aesthetics, of course.

Regardless, these look really good.

Color and lighting are a little different. I think I’m going to add the panels back in. I also liked them, or the idea of them, but I think I can do them better. Something just wasn’t quite right about them.

Grunge and trash and general roughness would be great! I’ll work on that.
