Eevee: use jpg as transpenrcy maps

I’m sorry if this is obvious or has been explained before, I searched Google for hours and I could not find a solution. I hope there is an answer to this issue.

I don’t model. I want to use Blender to create scenes from pre-made assets. Many of the materials found in the marketplace, from other 3D packages, have separate diffuse and transparency maps, where the transmap is a B&W JPG image. Black indicates the transparent part of the material.

For example, lots of OBJ models have materials mapped in this way.

I tried to set up an Eevee material to use transmaps (see attachement) and I could not get any result. The material renders solid.

  • Is this possible in Blender/Eevee?
  • If so, could you please provide an example of a node network?

Thank you very much in advance.

the jpg format does not support alpha channel.

The “magic” setting is in the material settings in the material tab:

Set this to something appropriate (in your case most likely “Alpha Clip” for a JPEG containing a black and white opacity map) and it’ll work.

You are absolutely right, SteffenD. Either Alpha Clip or Alpha Blend work.

Thank you very much for the quick reply, I really appreciate it.
