Made in around 10~11 hours. Modelling took 90% of the time, so the textures/lights are average… Blender + colour correction in PS.
It’s a slightly asian styled dragon, inspired by a koto concert I saw on Saturday night at the opera house - they played some modern compositions, one symbolising fire and I really enjoyed it
The modelling was most fun, so here are some wires:
Wow :o Added last, but not last at all Modeling is fantastic but I like texture of his skin too And he has fantastic expresion. I really like this pic, congrats for your skills Maybe he can have steam coming from his nostrils? (hope it is right word ) Most of asian dragons I sow have it and it would add his expresion new dimension…
I got a PM from hazmat (hope you don’t mind me mentioning this here) asking if it was possible to see the .blend file in order to see how other people like to work, and their techniques. This is very flattering of course, and I appreciate when other people post their .blends as well (like nico) so I’ve uploaded my WIP .blend files, along the stages from start to finish: http://reblended.com/www/broken/challenge/elemental/
I hope it’s helpful! Please keep in mind though that the mesh is quite messy and nasty in some areas - it was quite a rush to finish on time, so some things had to be sacrificed.
Hanzo also asked me for a version of my experimental blender I’m using. I should really update the thread on blender.org soon, but I’m late for univ and will just re-post this here for now:
It’s just my testing version here… It’s very unfinished/WIP, and there is junk laying around everywhere (and some bits may not fully work). But of course it’s definitely usable (that’s what I’ve been working in for a while now). The editing menus in the 3D viewport header are unfinished - I’m aiming to have them so that when you have a mesh selected, it shows mesh editing tools, curve selected, curve editing tools, etc. etc. But the View menu and Mode and Shading popup-menus should be ok
but the gui you work on looks very much more professional than Blender have had before, a truly facelift over 2½ years that I have been using Blender…
but where is your experimental Vertical GUI version of this interface? I would like to see something similar to LightWave which I think uses the Desktopspace very good, not much cluttered interface, just nice tabs at top, tiny ones to be able to swap buttons on either left or right…would be neato to have it too in Blender
/me says “damn, I need to attend to a challenge some time soon, never been there :P”
Made a small tweaking update after some suggestions on cgtalk. Improved colours, slightly stronger rim light, no ugly blur on the head, and also some subtle smoke (thanks Tol!). This image isn’t entered in the comp of course, just something so that I can feel more happy about calling it ‘finished’
BTW ztonzy: it was only a proof-of-concept, just part of the material buttons panel. I’ll return to it when I get a chance. I have a feeling I’ll be busy soon though so I’ll have to squeeze in some time - I’m 4 weeks late deciding on an idea for my graduation project, and I’ve just decided to make an expressionist animated short. Had so much fun with the modelling in this comp, I’d like to concentrate on that aspect and will probably do something with the ideas in the sketches I posted in traditional forum… Busy times ahead!
Hey! Looks much better now :o I like original post, but this is outstanding. I named my entry Fury of the mighty ones, but compared to your beast my “mighty ones” looks like kitties This dragon is fury itself, his expressions awakes the beast within myself. And that how truly art works.
To be honest I was little disappointed that merely no one responded to my entry, but now I finally get it. This is what it is all about-expresion, not description, to go straight not by the complicated composition. I have learnt much in this contest, and will have learn even more to get better. Also for this you definitely got my vote and big thanks.
Sorry for the patos in my post, didn´t sleep again due to forthcoming ECTS, but meaning I really meant so:D
Tol: Wow, what an intense post! I think it’s great that you can self-critique your own work. Many people get very ‘precious’ about things, which blinds them to ways in which they can improve things. I personally like to be harsh on myself - if you already know what to do to make a work better, you’re almost already there. Knowing what and why to do something is the hard part. Doing it is easy Looking forward to your next work.
dgtlxploit: Blender + small post effects and colour correction in PS. I don’t know what you mean about the eyeball? It’s an image texture from the Blender texture CD.
slikdigit: heh, well I wouldn’t really say that! I don’t really know anything much about programming and have no proper training. Just a designer with a big interest in UI and enough experience in javascript/asp/php to be dangerous! I do like learning new things and I’ll keep on experimenting though.
