Encounter: Imminent Future -- DEMO (bottom of post 1)

This is my latest project. It will be similar to Star wars: Knights Of The Old Republic (1, not 2) in level layout and speech, but with a real time combat system. right now I am getting the base programing down first. The visuals are in glorious GLSL, thanks to the apricot team!

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO CARE, STORY:
This is what i have for the introduction to the storyline. it still needs work, and I want to call the high council something original, but it will do for now.

One decade ago, the Prophet of the high counsel spoke of a coming threat. He told of a mighty vessel far beyond any known technological advancements, able to destroy any opposition in its path. The Prophet told of its apparent mission- remove war from the galaxy, by any means necessary. He believed that in order to spare the lives of billions, they must remove all military presence, and, because the prophet’s fortunes have never failed to become fact, the council decided in favor of this solution. But not all agreed. A select few members found the apparent reason for the ships arrival suspicious. Why would a warship be sent to remove war? So they spoke out against the council. The council leaders did not like this uprising against their decision, so those who opposed were banished. These exiles, knowing the council would not do anything to stop the coming slaughter, formed a rebel group known as the Alliance. Upon hearing of this Alliance, the council ordered a bounty on all members of the movement, stating that they were ‘threats to galactic security’. And so they went into hiding, quietly trying to gain strength and numbers, waiting for the day of the foreshadowed vessel’s arrival, and the beginning of the worst war the galaxy had ever seen.

If no snags are hit, A combat demo should be coming soon! There are now many, many trees. The enemy now has peripheral vision, so he will only attack you if he sees you or you attack first. You will soon be able to defend yourself.

08.12.08
Things are going smooth. The new combat system is fully operational (besides fps view).

Looking for Aliens, objects,plants, Anything!
This game needs may different races of aliens, random objects, plants, everything! so if yo feel in the mood, create some concept drawings or simple meshes! you will be acknowledged for your contributions. let your imagination go crazy!
NOTE:
I would just like to inform everyone that if you send me a model, and I remake it, it is not because you’re model sucked, it is because everyone has a different modeling style. In order for the characters to blend nicely, they have to be the same style. I am using your concepts, and am always looking at the original to make sure I get it looking as close as possible. I have seen great work so far, and hope you have not felt insulted in any way. You’re model’s are awesome and I am honored that you want to help me with this project. Thank you for your hard work and support!

Not in the mood to model? Try making names!
Don’t like “Huchra’s Lens” as a title? Come up with something else! Make random location names, Character names, Any names! FUN FACT: Huchra’s Lens is the name of an actual galaxy, Which is where I decided this game should take place. I thought it would be nice to give it a turn, rather than Pegasus or Andromeda.

please PM me you work. Thanks!

DEMO:

you guys have gone too long without seeing anything fro this, so here it is! There are fifty thousand glitches, one of the major ones has to do with the .exe files. the Enemies do not respond in the executables, so I suggest opening the P1-AR file in Apricot Version 15939 (it ONLY works properly in this specific version). Anyway have fun and please give feedback!

Making use of those wonderful shadows, I see. Too bad I can’t use them. No mac build.

don’t feel too bad. in they’re current state they eat up at least 20% of the rasterizer. And only 2 spotlights can be used at one time.

Wow, this looks really great!! I love the shadows.

If your whole scene has real time shadows and they only use 20% of the rasterizer, that’s not all that bad.

the light gets blocked if its behind a wall, thus he does not have a shadow. about 3/4 of my scene is shadowless, and i like to use lighting for effects, so i usually have them small… but if your scene can use it, i guess it would work.

that made no sence, did it…

Wow!! Looks excellent! I’m gonna watch this thread…the graphics are beautiful… Five stars before its released!

very cool!

Very ambitious, although with one look at your screens i have no doubt your very capable.
Nice style as well.

Looking very good!

looking great, I might make some aliens later on : )
are you using normal maps and such, or just a simple cartoony style?

Too bad I can’t use them. No mac build.

yes there is, look on graphicall. you can filter by OS, which makes it easier to see what there is for mac.

looks good so far!

THIS is how to announce a project, looks absolutely stunning! I love the mix of cartoony and realistic, you’ve made it work perfectly.

wow, looks amazing man!

Please keep up the good work

Thanks for the support guys! I just got my conversational system fixed. You ca now have a full conversation, with dialog choices, with the orange guy. I am only using the spec settings in the texture tab, im afraid normal maps will kill my already low framerate…

Great work so far Matt! Definitely Watching this!

Do you have a poly limit for aliens? I kinda wanna make one after looking at this.

It looks great Matt. You are a talented designer. Unfortunately, I do have quite a few crits and suggestions. I don’t necessarily feel qualified to do so, but I’m going to anyhow.

First order of business; you mentioned a low framerate. It’s mainly because of your realtime shadows. You should select shadeless and bake AO, Lights, and Shadows to your map. That way you will create the mood you wanna create and also be able to raise your framerate. If you want to keep the spec on your model, deselect the shadow button on the model.

Next, I hope you are going to fix your textures. They are stretched, clipped and distorted as many ways as I see possible. Of course, I’m not gonna sit here and tell you how to fix it. You’ll have to work on that yourself. good luck haha.

With your cartoony style and realistic level, there needs to be a median. The character will feel too separated from the environment if you don’t create one. The easiest way to do this without completely dismantling and de-manning your environment is to add plants and objects that are very “out of this world-ish” as eye candy.

Other than that, you’ve really done a great job. You’ve gone above and beyond proving yourself to me. You’ve even inspired me.

peace,
-nick

Not really, Just try to stay under 2000 faces. I can lower the poly count of the mesh if necessary. and remember, these are aliens, not all of them have to be 2 armed, 2 legged bipeds, let your imagination run wild! A great tool for randomly creating alien ideas is the Spore creature creator. I’ve made a few concepts in it. It can spark ideas.

Thanks nick! I just re-modeled the area and haven’t gotten around to re-mapping the textures yet. I’ll try baking the lights. And, as i said, i haven’t added the “little things” yet, as the programing is eating up all of my time. Thanks for the advise!

Sweet, you don’t know how happy it makes me to see a project like this. I have been thinking for a long time about an RPG with a Tatooine type setting. Do you have any guidelines for aliens? Robots too? How about some embellishments i.e. little critters skittering/buzzing around?
