Error: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION related to graphics card?

I’ve found a dozen discussions out there resulting from the same error text, but none quite match what I’m seeing. I’m pretty sure it’s something wrong with my setup, but I don’t know how to proceed towards a fix.

Whenever I try to switch renderers to Cycles, or try to click on the system tab in settings, Blender crashes and prints “Error: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION” in the console. Specs:

  • Dell Precision M3800
  • NVidia Quadro K1100M with latest drivers
  • Windows 7 Pro SP 1
  • Blender 2.77 64 bit

I’ve tried removing Blender entirely and reinstalling, and when I did so Cycles worked for a day. After restarting Windows though, Blender was back to crashing as before. Yesterday towards the end of the day I tried again after having the computer on for about 6 hours, and Cycles worked just fine. This morning, again after a restart, no dice. Removing user prefs has no effect. What should I try next?

Thanks!

I now have a dependable work around, though I don’t know why it works. I also often use Rhino and have found that if I start Rhino before starting Blender, Blender doesn’t have any issue with Cycles. Rhino doesn’t need to be running, it just needs to have run before Blender.

I had this problem too, managed to fix it with the environment variable trick mentioned in this ticket (i have Nvidia graphics card)and : https://developer.blender.org/T49584 . I hope that it will help someone.
