Event Horizon

Event Horizon

Hello everyone!

Sharing my latest space study, this time exploring a black hole and its accretion disk.

The entire effect was created procedurally in Blender, with some additional work done in compositing. The bending of light is based on an approximation of real gravitational lensing around a black hole, with some simplifications to keep the calculations manageable and leave room for artistic freedom.

This one took quite a few attempts to get right. Many of the learning resources I found were made for older Blender versions and no longer translated directly to the current setup, so I had to experiment with different approaches and adapt them until I found a result I was happy with.

I don’t have a clay render for this one, since there isn’t really much interesting geometry to show. It would basically be a sphere for the black hole and a box for the accretion disk, while most of the final look comes from the procedural setup itself.

Side by side comparison with the raw render before compositing:

Thanks for stopping by, hope you enjoyed it!

Best regards,
Stefan

Thanks Bart, that’s awesome news! Have a great day yourself! :raising_hands:

You somehow made a black hole look both beautiful and terrifying

Thanks, that’s actually exactly how I feel about them too! They’re beautiful, fascinating, and terrifying in equal measure. They might be one of the last great unknowns of the universe.
