Every single one of my meshes bend unnaturally after rigging

I’ve been using blender for about a week now, and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Every mesh with bones I have created fails horribly and starts bending and shrinking in pose mode. I have watched countless of videos, but still haven’t found a solution.

Here is one of my failed creations:

Where’s the mesh?

I linked it in Dropbox, I’m told that new users can’t link files.

In that file there is only bones, no mesh, as far as I can see.

No, I’m sorry, looking at the wrong file.

Weird. When I open it, it has the mesh and the bones

Ok, hopefully someone with more knowledge may come along but it looks to me you just have to clean up the weights. The foot.L vertex group for instance is assigned to the calf area of the mesh. Did you weight paint this, automatic weights or assign vertex groups? For the head I see how it appears that you have the hair controlled by different bones from the head so it bends funny.

I used automatic weights first, but it came out like that. The only part I have edited myself with weight editor is the left leg 5, but it still bends, unlike the other one for some reason. The most annoying part is, that every mesh I have created so far, has come out like this; broken. I’m starting to think I somehow messed up the default settings in Blender

OK, I think your normals were inverted so that the auto weights was not working correctly. You can see the direction of the normals but toggling this on and off in edit mode. To flip the normals you select the face and press shift n.

here is a blend where I corrected the normals and re-tried the auto weights. Its an improvement I think.

Rigging not working_local.blend (1.8 MB)

edit: toggle normals in edit mode

You are a lifesaver! Seriously! I was about to give up. Thank you so much.

Your very welcome.
