Yes true but when you are working on an already existing face, this addon will take care of constructing the appropiate split faces.
You would have to do this manually otherwise.
But maybe not the most useful addon, just that not all people know the technique you describe also, this addon is more direct.
Still, it only took me a couple of hours…
