exact measurements

hey
at school i have to use a program for engernerring called solid works and i was wondering is it possible to get the exact measurement for a model. im hopeing can do this with blender because solid works is hard to use and just so mathamaticly stupid

Any computer cannot do exact measurement… no matter what software being used due to computation/size limitation over time. In Blender 2.5, you can set/assign units - to give you greater confident. (previously, 2.49, you have to imagine the size according to Blender units)

It is easier and faster to model object separately according to its size and assembly the entire object according to their size/scale percentage.

Eg: A detailed mobile phone model in a detailed huge warehouse.

  • Screws/components for the mobile phone can be modeled in different scene and make it as 1 group.
  • Within the mobile phone there will be multiple screws and components which will later be another group which will makes a mobile phone.
  • Multiple mobile phones can be group together as 1 box.
  • Put the box in the warehouse.

Depending on the camera viewpoint, computer will eliminate/truncate unnecessary vertices decimal places on of the models without loosing the accuracy of each models data:vertices/coordinates/uv/etc.

“Edge length”, “Faces Angles”, “Face Area” option in Blender are also very helpful in accurate modeling.

To answer your question: yes Blender can do exact measurements. It has “Snap to Grid” much like other 3D packagees.

The precision modelling guide might help you incorporate a CAD type work flow in Blender

Here is good Tutorial on Measuring, to get an idea on how it’s done in Blender.

awesome thanks to all but is their a way to measure object in meters or centermeters because i know there is a button that in solid works called dimension where you click on the model and you can choose the length depth witth and height just by typeing it in to a little box.

whoopes i sent a sencond post

If you are using 2.5 there is a metric button on the units panel under the scene menu.

im using blender 2.49b and i dont really know how to use blender 2.5 because every thing is different so i dont really know how to use it as well. one of the thing i figure out how to do is how to slit the screen in to two or three or 4 differnt sections. and where is the scene menu because i dont even know where that is on 2.49
oh and ridix is it possible to do what happend in that video in blender 2.49b

oh yes i also wanted to cut holes in my models with deleting a whole face eg: a circle. in solid works you get this tool where you can set the blue sqaure of what ever kind of shape on the model that and then you press this button called exstruded cut and it creates the whole. can this be done in blender

thanks to all please read and answer the other 2 posts i have above this one. the webeite thinks i havent posted those other 2 posts because it was having a database error
