Hi, I’m still a real beginner to 3d animation and video editing.
My favourite music video is RM ‘moonchild’ Lyric Video (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9ntaxClfrA)
I would be very grateful if anyone could give me a breakdown of how this music video may have been made, and what skills you would need.
I would like to be able to make a video inspired by this, but I have absolutely no idea where to start.
I know this is quite a vague question but any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Hi,
Looks like they wanted to get a virtual studio look.
You need to make some UV mapped planes, to take some animation, the guy in the chair I would film and then map to a plane and stick him in.
Some of the text is separate (use a text object)
Hope that helps. feel free to ask about anything specific…
Ps.lets not talk about the music (thats 3 minutes of my life I’ll never get back!)

They have the small set, probably just made out of foamcore. You can see it in the first shot.
Then you build an exact 3d version, say in blender. Now UV map it and put a grid on the textures.
Render it over black.
Now take a video projector and position it on your real set in the exact location that your virtual camera was in 3d. Project your render and, from that angle it will look like the image in the first shot.
From there you can do whatever you want on the 3d image, videos etc. and it will project perfectly from that angle. Now you can have your actor sit on the set.
I think in some cases, they rendered the projection to show the reflections of some of the words but not the actual word, then superimposed the words after, so they would appear over the actor but still have a reflection.
Cool video.
If you look up “building projections” it’s the same concept, with bigger projectors.
Thank you so much!
How would you animate the words in blender? (for example ‘we born to be sad’ bit at 0:30)
(I would appreciate it if you could explain in relatively a lot of detail, I’m a noob!)
This might be a silly question but would it be easier to make the words in another application (After Effects for example) and overlay it into a 3d animation instead of using blender?
Also, it would be amazing if you could please upload a higher resolution screenshot that you kindly sent, just because I can’t make up in detail all the words on the nodes and they seem very helpful! Please don’t worry if this is difficult.
Thank you!
Hi! Thank you so much!
I’ve looked into projection mapping a tiny bit, and it seems super interesting and cool!
Is it possible to projection map within blender (i.e. project an already rendered video onto an object within blender), rather than projecting onto a real life object?
Text:
Curve as a path.
This was just a Uv mapped material, you are going to want to use an image sequence/animation in here, for the stuff thats going on on the walls etc…
Yes I would probably use AFX or DAvinci Resolve for the actual content and text.
Apart from the text that has a reflection I would do that in Blender.
Hope that helps
Thank you so much for your help!
