I rendered out separate passes as EXRs using the file output node but only the EXRs saved through the comp node are viewable by other applications. The EXRs saved through the file output node are viewed as black. Im trying to comp this all together in after effects but it sees the EXRs as black. Only the z-buffer is viewable. Any thoughts or suggestions? I love blender’s compositor but I need to do this in after effects for other reasons.
Here are some frames of the object and shadow (both are viewed as black by other apps) as well as z-buffer (which displays correctly).

Thanks
I can view the object.exr fine tested in both blender compositor and djv view? it just needs a gamma of .454 or 2.2 to see it (its fairly dark)
I don’t know if you have access to After Effects or not but when I import it and extract the rgba channals it looks as though there is only alpha data and no color. I see how it works fine in djv but even my os viewer sees the other EXRs fine.
I figured it out it was a combination of colorspace conversion and gama problems. Thanks for your help.
Also, you get brownie points for guessing what the crap this is for.
Im going to guess your trying to composite a 3d Cube into a live action plate…im guessing the reason you’re using after effects is either for some course you are doing / more comfortable with it / following a tutorial.
Well the cube is the 2001 Space Odyssey monolith
The fact the the geometry is rudimentary is beside the point.
Wanting feedback? the sun direction is off… look at the shadows produced by the trees… the shadows in the plate are more sharp / longer / rotated a bit more screen left then what you currently have…
You are right however I could not get lamps that would give me the perfect shadow. Point sun and spot laps all gave shadows that grew too wide but they were sharp. The area light gave the correct shadow shape but was too soft. The shadow lines up well with the tree’s shadow that is occluded by the guy. I guess I should have placed the lamp further away. I can fix the softness of the shadow in AE.

This is another still from a test. At the end of the day this is good enough for video and for the mindless viewing public.
Also the shadow is off by a frame in the first still.
