EXTERNAL GPU box for laptops

hey
i was wondering if using an external gpu is possible for getting better rendertimes using cycles (not for gaming) and laptops
i googled some and found this http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=988062

yet im not sure what such a setup is capable of…

i wonder if anyone of us have played with something like that or maybe has sufficient hardware knowledge?

It should work pretty well, in my opinion, since all it seems to do is externalize PCIe. The problem with games is usually the reduced bandwidth, but most GPGPU programs (including cycles) are designed for minimal data transfer anyway. I would expect the scene upload times to be increased noticably, but the general render performance not so much.
