Extracting mesh data from .blend

I’ve got an idea for a project, but I must first understand how(or if) it’s possible to work with a .blend file in say python? I’m wanting to be able to work with the vertex and indices values for particular objects…For example: Take a .blend file and automatically pull from it the mesh data for use in an external application…kind of like when you export an object to a particular format, only automated…

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it

I’ve been digging around and from what I’ve found so far it would be easiest to convert the objects in the scene to .obj format and then work with this file type as opposed to trying to work with the .blend file itself…still curious if it would be possible though…

of course it’s possible, but there’s no module for python that i’m aware of, so you would have to write a complete blend I/O module to work with it.

There is afaik a C library somewhere for blend reading/writing, and Blender itself uses blend I/O (of course), but you should really use a python approach - obj export is one option, but you could also write your own exporter and keep overhead low.
