extracting sound from an .avi file?

I have an avi that i want to take part of the sound out of for something else- what kind of program would i need for this? any suggestions?

I would use VirtualDub to extract the sound to a .wav file.

thx but the avi I have is in DivX codec- and VirtualDub Doesnt like that… any other suggestion? or can I get DivX for VirtualDub?

If you have the DivX codec installed, Virtual Dub should not have a problem with messing with the movie.
