I have a plane were I am trying to extrude the right side to the right and create a new section, and I have done this several times before. I select the vertices with B select on one side of the plane and hit EKey, and what I want it to do is extrude by region, which happens sometimes, but not always. Sometimes I only get the option to do it by edges or vertices. I’m just trying to figure out why I can get that option to only appear sometimes. What is the solution?
extruding by region only happens with 2 or more faces. I think the face normals are averaged to determine the direction to extrude.
If you are trying to extrude the edge of a plane, you want extrude edges, not extrude region. Extrude regions only works when you are extruding faces, which apparently happened “sometimes” because you had inadvertently doubled up the edge by extruding it twice and before you selected it and moved it. It looks like a plane, because the faces you extruded with extrude region had no depth. This is why the subsurface you mentioned in your other post was messed up: doubled faces, extra vertices. To get the edge to move along an axis, press g to grab the edge, and then type the axis letter, x, y or z, and it will move only in that direction.
