I’m a complete noob when it comes to blender and general 3d modelling. Figured I’d start into it. This is my first project. Tell me what you think so far. Any criticisms or suggestions are welcome. The first image is without a sub surf modifier, the second is with.
What are you planning on creating here? This can become many things. So far, it looks kind of human but on the other hand, the eyes remind me of a cat because they are sloped. Good job, though!
I don’t mind the sloped eyes at all - see Google images for Khadak. Humans are built all kinds of strange sometimes. You should lock in some eyelid Loops soon and take it easy on the number of edges going around the corner of the eye outside.
As you go farther, it will be easier to critique. Keep a reference or two handy like a guide or roadmap and keep proportions in mind so facial features are more or less where they belong. Block in the big parts, then come in to the details - i.e. too early for nostril details.
Your user name is bizarre! What does that mean?
Looks like your headed down the right track. Post some wires so maybe we can comment on your topology so far.
@HelloHiHola I believe it is read “Undeciphered” x)
Yeah, Artist is right about my username; just something I thought of a long time ago. Thanks for the suggestions. I realize now that this one is ok, but I am focusing much too much on details right now.
@Shu I’m going for a somewhat stylized, exotic looking human, but still human. You’re right though, it does seem almost catlike, with the eyes.
With my focus on the details, I did make a few mistakes, easily fixed, but I think I will restart with your comments in mind. I’ll keep posting images though. I’ll keep the same look though (sloped eyelids :P).
Damn, just realized how formal I sound here.
Sorry for taking so long to respond, by the way.
It’s good. Let the formality flow through you
Good start, can’t wait to see this finished. I once tried creating a human face, it became like an Orc’s face … That’s how screwed up i was.
Happens, lol. Thats what I expected for this, too. But I am gonna restart, figure go at it with their suggestions in mind.
Could you post the wires, please? Just for to see the topology. If it’s correct, always is easier to tweak.
Here are the wires for those who wanted to see.
The spheres are the eyes, obviously, and were apparently part of the mirror modifier. I can’t make them invisible.
When you start over, think edge-flow. Get some quads, as many or as few as you like, coming out of the eyeball region radially like the hands on a clock, not the squares on a checker board. This will greatly help keep your mesh moderately smooth.
Think of it more like building a boat where the wood planks flow with the shape of the bow or curve of the railing; don’t piece squares in like a jigsaw puzzle. It’s tough stuff but keep at it!
I’d recommend mixing some tutorials. For example, I start with the lips, move my way upwards, and then use the excellent way mentioned on BlenderCookie to model the back of the head.
The ears can be a b**** though…
I’m not gonna worry about how it looks with subsurf yet, though. Maybe later. Heres the wires.
That’s a good idea, if it looks like a face without subsurf then chances are it will with it as well ! But, it looks like you’re off to a good start, maybe a little high Poly ? I always think, I can always add, but it’s harder to take away. Meaning start simple and then refine it. also the nose looks like it is too narrow.
The first image is what I would do to make my work easier, I just got rid of those lines completely, because they are unnecessary. Also, if you haven’t heard of edge loops, now you will! Edge loops are basically just the way the edges flow and “loop” they are helpful in keeping a clean looking model when smoothed and for animations if you every think about animating. The second image is of my WIP and I think it has relatively good loops however if you google edgeloops you will find much better than mine.
I hope this helps, keep up the good work and you’ll get a great result !

I have a question; when rendering, I keep getting strange results on the top lip, which I just started.
I checked the result at level 4 subsurf, and it gave lines following those shadows. Could you give me some suggestions?
I haven’t used your suggestions yet PeteMc, though I will tomorrow. Thanks, btw
Here is an image of the topology in that area. There are no nGons or doubles, and I don’t know what else it could be. The lighting is fine everywhere else.
check for double-faces looks like that could be your issue… or the mirror modifier is up too high.
