Fade to black

I have an animation that I would like to gradually fade to total darkness and then lighten again in another scene. The animation itself has seven lamps at various settings in the scenes. Is there a tutorial available? Any help is appreciated.

Well one way you could do it it, select a lamp, push f4 for lamp buttons, move cursor to bottom half of screen where lamp buttons are, push I and insert energy. Move forward in your animation change energy push I choose energy and so on until you get the effect you want. Lower energy level on IPO to darken raise to lighten.

You’ll want to use the Sequence Editor to do that. I don’t personnaly know of any tutorial on it, but I think there’s one or two in the tutorial list.

Thanks guys. I wasn’t to far from the logic ;-). I was trying to apply an alpha transition to the lamps. hehe Didn’t work very well.

I’d animate the Lamp energy.

Easier than to use the sequence editor.

On the other hand if you wanto to fade from one scene to another the sequence editor rules.

You can also put a plane right in front of the camera and animate its alpha. That way you don’t have to play around with all the lamps in the scene plus you can fade to any color you like, just set the plane’s material to shadeless, ztransp and the desired color.
And it fades objects that emit light too, which the lamp solution won’t. Of course if you’re moving the camera you will have to parent the plane to it.

Happy blending!

That’s a pretty cool solution to the problem. It opens up the possibility of texturing the transition so one can set the mood for the next scene.
