Fallout - #256fes fanart

Hey!

Another #256fes character fanart to my collection
This time - the Vault Dweller from classic Fallout (1997)

#256fes is sort of a japanese twitter 3D modeling challenge, held around february 8th, when you model anything or anyone using 256 tris and 256x256 texture (or less).

It’s quite a a fun puzzle and a solid optimization exercise.
Might look mediocre and ugly, until you try it yourself

I’m a Fallout fan, it was one of my first gaming experiences, so after watching s2 of Amazon series, I’ve decided to go back, where things started.

Initially I’ve made just the Vault Dweller figure. I’ve modelled the person as close to original game sprite, using instances and reference overlay

Then I’ve made a quick&dirty hipoly version, baked it, then overpainted details in 3DCoat. Finally, I’ve downsized and compressed the texture, converting it to fallout’s 256-color palette

I also love adding some environment to place the character into - so I’ve made the iconic Vault 13 Door and surrounding cave with the pack of rat eyes - in corresponding manner and using the same pipeline

Finally, I’ve added some idle animations like butt-scratching and rats blinking.

256 tris for a character? You must have some kind of supercomputer…

Lo poly is always fun!
I look back to my times of eternal high poly doom, and feel good to be free. Not to mention lo poly absolutely rocks and I love the aesthetic!
Nice work!
