what games do you like to play.
My wife can roll-through the levels of “Q*Bert” until they start over at Level 1. She could get an hour’s entertainment from one quarter.
As for me, I was always fascinated by “Asteroids” because the original game used vector graphics. I, too, could play it as long as I wanted to. But the computer-programmer in me was always thinking about how it was done. (There was an even earlier game, called Spacewar, which ran on minicomputers and was never AFAIK ported to a game console.)
I’m by no means a gamer, I log maybe 10 hours a month max, but here’s my list:
Favourite Overall
Fire Emblem Awakening
Favorite for Unwinding
Borderlands 2
Favorite to play with my wife
Mario Kart Wii
Favorite for a sick day
Tears of the Kingdom
There’s an emulator that lets you play Spacewar online. Plus, if I remember correctly, it perfectly emulates a PDP-1 and uses the game’s original code. https://www.masswerk.at/spacewar/
I don’t play much these days either. Partly because I’m short on time, which is even tougher since I’m really into RPGs, and partly because I’ve gotten pretty picky as I’ve gotten older.
Out of everything I’ve played in the last few years, I’d definitely stick with just two titles: Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077
Like books and movies, “favourite” game for me is a matter of current mood and needs. And there’s just so many great games out there! A lot of which I probably haven’t even played yet.
Unreal and Unreal Tournament will always have a special place in my heart. Ancient castles and spaceships, industrial zones and serene landscapes… Made all the more magical by one of the best soundtracks of all time.
…But right now I’m in the mood for all that is Remedy-verse and very exited for upcoming Resonant
TAKE! CONTROL!!! ![]()
@Inoshiro: I had no idea that such an emulator existed! Thanks for sharing!
However – I suppose that I am not surprised . . .
I played Frostpunk , enjoyed it a lot . ![]()
I’ve been gaming practically forever (for almost 50 years). As a child, I got one of the very first video game consoles ever made, from 1976 (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interton_Video_3000). It even came with a light gun - a very basic one, though ![]()
Over the years, my most played genres have probably been turn-based strategy, RPGs, first-person shooters, and open-world games. And, of course, the Civilization series again and again and again (just one more round)…
Most recently, I was playing “The Outer Worlds 2,” and now, starting June 5th, I’m really looking forward to the remake of Gothic 1.
I’ve always found it difficult to make rankings (of any kind), and the fact that I’ve been playing video games since the '70s doesn’t make it any easier.
I love simulations, racing games, RPGs, adventures. The list is long, and I play Battlefield regularly.
The games I’d play again right now (and have already played some of them recently) are (not in order of importance):
- UFO
- Subnautica
- Fallout
- Mass Effect
- Dead Space
- Alien Isolation (in case I need to add a little anxiety and stress to my life already full of anxiety and stress…
)
I was prepared to go the rest of my life with the Half-Life series forever sitting high atop my list of greatest game(s) ever, and it might still be (tbd), but holy shit has The Last of Us series really given it a good run for its money. I actually just played those (remastered versions) in the last year or so.. a couple times. Astonishing, in every single way.
Then immediately after those would have to be Portal 1 & 2, but especially Portal 2 and the countless hours playing user-created chambers.. that I am ashamed to admit just how much…
Some others that were effing incredible and were thoroughly enjoyed:
• Inside & Limbo, but especially Inside…Wow.. just wow! And oh how I yearn for PlayDead’s next game, which can’t come out soon enough…
• Dishonored series
• Alien Isolation
• Tac Ops (the Unreal Tournament mod that likely heavily inspired Counter Strike, way back when)
• Sniper Elite series
• Splinter Cell series
• Far Cry 3
• Days Gone
And then there is Thief 2… I have to tell you guys, I have played many a game over the years, but oh boy did that one stand out as having the most incredible writing, character development, thoroughly realized world-building, and that damn Father Karras, who gives Dr. Breen of HL2 a very, very good run-for-his-money as arguably the single best game antagonist ever… Truly great stuff. So sad Looking Glass Studios failed, and so early in 2000. ![]()
I don’t do nearly as much gaming these days, but when I do I try my damnedest to make sure I am playing nothing but the best of the best…
I get you, same here. I couldn’t possibly list all the games I enjoyed back in the 8-bit era, add up all the hours of fun I had in front of my beloved Amiga 500, and everything that came after. That’s why I made the mistake of limiting myself to just the last couple of years and…
…I left out Mass Effect. I didn’t play it back in the day, but two or three years ago I bought the version that includes Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3, letting you play them straight through. I’ve rarely had such a rewarding RPG experience as the one I had with those games.
I’ve had Alien: Isolation in my Steam library for ages, but I just can’t bring myself to play it. It starts off slow and feels kind of boring to me. I’m probably judging it too harshly, right? RIGHT? ![]()
I haven’t played Isolation yet, but I imagine it’s a bit like SOMA (wonderful game, btw) - it might not click immediately, but after a short while you learn to be terrified when the game gets suspiciously slow and quiet ![]()
OMFG, you guys both need to play Alien: Isolation!.. If you are an A L I E N fan at all (but just being a fan of kickass gaming will do), Isolation is a must play! Period. Yes it is scary, but not pants-shitting terrifying like Outlast or something like that. Yeah bros, you need to play that mofo! btw, it’s pretty funny, but the humanoid “synthetics” are actually scarier than the alien itself, even though that bastard can be pretty damn scary… those synthetics may actually cause you to poop your pants a little, now that I think about it. Truly a masterpiece though. But don’t take my word for it, there are countless glowing YT reviews that will get you super pumped to fire it up.
I also failed to mention Star Wars Dark Forces… Even though you look at old screenshots and think: “could we really have gone so apeshit playing THAT (or DOOM, et al) back in the day?!!”.. and the answer is yes, yes, yes. I can remember (like it was yesterday) that playing that damn game (and the other SW that followed) was fucking exhilarating! What a revelation that was, especially for a SW freak! And the soundtrack and audio effects… Ye gods that was incredible experiencing being inside SW universe for the first time… And I’ve come to realize games like that back in the bronze age (with their handfuls of carefully organized pixels really) forced one’s brain to paint in all of the missing details, which in a way could be argued is more high-def when you are truly immersed in a game… I dunno. I’m sure others have written and spoken about this phenomenon aplenty, but all I know is gaming was pretty effing exciting back then too.
Jedi Outcast was my first experience with this great series. It always appealed to me that it was a complete artwork that did its own thing, and not just went into “hey, wanna fight in THAT iconic battle from the movies?” like Battlefront. Sure, there were characters from existing works - we’ve met Medina, Mon Mothma, Fett, Skywalker, Calrissian, Rogue Squadron (leader voice only), as well as EU’s legendary Mara Jade - but they weren’t treated as random cameos, meeting them mostly made sense and characters stayed true to themselves.
Live-action cutscenes from the second game look rather amateur these days, yet the honest enthusiasm that went into this work is timeless ![]()
I am a big (B I G) (very B I G) (probably the biggest
) fan of the Alien movie saga and I enjoyed a lot the atmosphere in Isolation.
I recommend to start playing it with room lights off…
“Slow and quiet” has been my experience with the 2 hours of Alien Isolation I have logged on Steam
. Btw, I still haven’t played SOMA. It’s been sitting in my library for ages. So many things (games to play) to do, so little time… ![]()
Alien Fan. ![]()
fan of kickass gaming. ![]()
I love horror, especially in movies. It’s just that I rarely find that same vibe in video games. Honestly, the last game that actually scared me was the original Silent Hill on PS1. That was eons ago! Maybe RE7 more recently, but that was mostly thanks to cheap jump scares.
Is Alien: Isolation’s gameplay similar to that mission in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty where you’re chased by a spider-bot that instantly crushes you if it catches you? If so, that gives me more anxiety than actual fear.

I’ve never played Dark Forces, but what you’re describing reminds me of my first time playing a legendary Star Wars game you’ve probably heard of/played: X-Wing (and later, TIE Fighter). Sure, it was back in the early ’90s, so they’d probably feel super naive by today’s standards, but I still remember the thrill of piloting a damn X-Wing, complete with those iconic sfx and, of course, the music.
Movie saga and series, don’t forget Alien:Earth ![]()
You guys convinced me to give Alien: Isolation another shot. It’s downloading as I type this! As for playing with the lights off, though… I’ll have to think about that. I’m not in my twenties anymore, and I’d like to keep my heart ticking for as long as possible! ![]()
ive got not much time in life,
but I still play C&C, like Red alert 2
I absolutely must look into this further. Stunning style.
I don’t want that responsibility! Especially if you’ve already played it for two hours, there’s a chance it’s not the game for you. Sad? Yes. But possible!
