Features of Mainstream Applications on Blender?

How can we program features of mainstream apps like Lightwave and Maya without violating copyrights?

For example, would it violate copyrights to program a feature like Maya’s “Complete Polygon” tool?

Explain what that is, please.

i think that only if you use the code that it is illegal.

Not necessarily. Intellectual property rights can sometimes be applied. The case being if you were to “copy” the way the “Complete Polygon” feature works, and if it is a “unique” feature to Maya. Whether you duplicate the code or not, if the look and feel is the same or very similar, it can be problematic to implement.

For songs if you use more than 10% of another song that isn’t yours it’s illegal, but if you copy 10% or less it’s legal.

henyrmop:

The complete polygon tool basically lets you place vertices and you can turn those vertices/edges into a polygon when your done planting vertices.

It’s like deleting all the vertices/edges/faces of an object but leaving its center, and doing a ctrl+LMB in Blender, but WAYYYYY less anyoing. IMO at least.

Don’t get sidetracked on this though, that’s just one example. There are many features in Maya I’d like to see in Blender. Like some sort of implementation of the Hot Box.

I think this would not be an issue of copyright but of patent infringment if there was a patent on that function. But it does not sound like the kind of thing that can be patented. I doubt there is any problem.

well virtual game station was a reverse engeniering of the playstation.
at the end sony was only able to kill that app by just buying the company and shutting it down.

so i guess when you can code it on your own you are fine.

This is not true.
