Feedback on posted artwork.

Can anyone please explain why it is so difficult for me to get feedback on my work?

Perhaps I’m not offering enough advice to other members on their artwork, so I don’t deserve any comments.

Maybe my artwork is not good enough to recieve comments or critisisms.

I don’t know, but anything anyone can suggest will be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a username change would help.

Cheers,

Tim.

Hey man,

I wouldn’t worry about it too too much, I feel the same way as well some times and wonder where all the replies are for me own posts. I think most CG artists feel this way when they post, and i notice that the ones that get the most posts are superupdated by the artist.

It makes you wonder tho sometimes, i know i have. You post something good and it gets only a few posts, where some other guy can post something not as good and it gets heaps more.

Who knows what makes people post, perhaps if you started making guarantees in your posts like “replying to this post will make your manhood grow” or something would entice more to speak up!!!

I remember a lot of your work was quite well done, if your not getting the replies you want just ask for it, let people know your not feeling the love.

Matt

Blend on, and blend well!!!

I actually noticed this too. Its probably not your fault but just the way a crowd reacts in a debate. I personally skim through the works quickly because I don’t have the time to post and just want to see what’s new and If I have the time to post well I will.

The post/reply number usually goes up if
1)the piece of artwork is absolutely increbible such as The butterfly effect. A perfect example of everyone drooling over it (which I think it deserves)
2)It turns into a work in progress. People just give more crits and the artist believes he should change it and it just contnues on and on
3)A flame war?
4)A debate on the point of the image
5etc

It really depends on too many factors for anyone to predict how much reaction and answers a project will get.

Just blend on :P. and if you think your work really goes unotices I wouldnt mind a little did a slight update bump (because I might have missed it :P)

Well, your work is always tip-top perfect, so if I responded every time saying, “Your work is always tip-top perfect ! Well done !” I’d feel a bit silly…

So , if you like, you can pretend that every single project you post has an additional reply by me proclaiming its prefection.

Good point, i too have passed up commenting because the artist did a good enough job and i simple didnt want to post a “wow, thats so good”.

Maybe try posting some absolute s#ite, real utter crap, and see if you get more posts!!!

sonix I think that it would help people to give feedback if you provided them more material. By this I mean that if you put a work to WIP/Focused Critique section, do offer the people references, links and other material that can give people insight to your work. It would help if you determined what kind of mood, emotion you are trying to reach with the work.

For me it is really hard to give proper feedback if there’s nothing to compare the work with. Of course, if there’s something obviously “wrong” in the work, it’s a different case.

I agree with Bapsis that I too pass up commenting if I can’t think of anything else to say than “wow, thats so good”.

Don’t worry sonix, the other users are just too busy fanboying and praising crappy lensflare art so they can claim that elYsiun is a friendly community. Post sh!t and you’ll get loads of excited replies! We’ve seen it happen, not once, not twice, not three times…

I think that most of the time people just don’t know enough to criticize your work. You are one of the higher-level artists here at elysiun, so you often cover territories that are beyond the average poster’s capacity.

For example, I’ve downloaded your raytraced spheres and planes so I can look at them whenever I want. However, I haven’t a clue how I’d improve them. They seem to have good composition and color schema and make better use of the raytracer than I know how…

If I ever try to do something similar it will be to your artwork and experience that I compare myself.

i always thought your work got a good amount of replys? your work is really decent!

if you are refering to the glass stuff you put in recent projects i think it was because it was cool to look at but nothing we havnt already seen a few times? it looked more like a cool test, then somthign you spent a good deal of time on.

one thing i realized awhile back is if you are going to be an aritst/creator, then the art needs to be your reward not the praise. if you are only making work to get others praise then you are making it for the wrong reason. make it because you love the process and end result, otherwise you are going to fall flat on your face.

sorry man, but it is the reality. i once made an animation that took a couple days. i thought it was the funniest thing i had ever seen, and it was so much fun to make. i posted it and it only got two replys, i was so busy laughing and enjoying my own work that i didnt even really notice nobody else commented, hahah. their is a lesson to be learned in that…

You’re doing stuff that’s above the average level of the community. 'scuse me if I hijack this thread but it’s an opportunity for me to tie up a lot of similar thoughts that I’ve discussed in other threads and in PM’s with others.

Elysiun is an ‘entry level’ app-based forum. Lot’s of users, both new to Blender and new to CG/3DCG, sign up and get wrapped up in both the community (because of its good vibe) and Blender (because of its, unique quirky nature and because it’s OSS). That’s a good thing!

Some get so excited that they go off and start their own forums, hoping that their Elysiun clone will have the same success as Elysiun. But Elysiun’s success is in its daily traffic. It’s quantity, not (necessarily) quality, and this is bourne out by the recurring threads about shiny spheres and crappy renders; focussed critique; WIP or Finished Project.

Those who work their way to a level above ‘entry level’ are the ones that complain, the ones that want to put limits on what can be posted or whether there should be sections dedicated for shiny experiments and ‘serious work’.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Elysiun (and it’s would-be clones) has, by the collective input of its users, become a “How Blender Works” forum, and it’s very successful at that, and as such has become an invaluable resource to the Foundation and the Users and Developers.

The next step is to have a forum (a new, self-contained forum or an offshoot of Elysiun/BlenderArtists on a seperate page) that , instead of How Blender Works, focuses on ‘How to work wit Blender’ or ‘How to put Blender to work’. Maybe Blender remains the main focus, but maybe it’s just one more app in the production pipeline. Either way the common denominator will be Blender and the emphasis will be on how to put it to work and not on how to get it to work.

I haven’t discussed this with Timothy or any of the Admins but one scenario may be that Elysiun could well continue to serve as an entry level forum while BlenderArtists becomes the production level forum. Personally I feel that it would work better if the production level forum was seperate and new, and was got off the ground by those who find Elysiun a little stifleing and immature, or unable (anymore) to satisfy their needs. Blenderman almost worked.

The bottom line is that Elysiun is all about how Blender works, that’s what generates the traffic that makes it a success. If you’re doing something that has nothing to do with which buttons to press to get such-and-such to happen, then most of that traffic isn’t really interested.

Thats the question people tried to get an answer since the time cavemens ruled the world. The universal question.

Seriously many times I have been forced to wrote: Ain’t there words enough to describe the greatness of my model? Also try to write NUDITY in the title and you would get more replies. If you get some replies that say chang that detail and you don’t do it people think like: “Why should I reply? He doesn’t change it anyway.” Also try to post many update and write in the title when you’re updated it.

Try it and you probably get more replies.

Fligh % --> Thats really sums the current “debate” of the current situation. Its clear and to the point. I agree with you that it really would be the best solution to the current problem. I don’t consider myself the best blender head out there nor the starting new user. Somewhere in the middle and i believe that , depending on the project I would use the appropriate forum. This leads to another problem. There are always people posting in wrong sections which overshadow other projects which in turns reduce the ammount of response to that thread. Its pretty anoying to see your project move back to page 3 with no reply because of the sheer traffic and number of posts of identical steel spheres etc etc etc

Well it’s really kind of you to tell me.

I really thought there was something wrong with my work. It’s not just at this forum either, which is why I thought I would make this post.

I have been an artist since I could first hold a crayon and found a big blank wall (sorry mum) and have always created art for the piece not for the rewards.

However I do find that praise can be an incentive for me to push my skills and create better artwork each time.

The one thing I really wish for though, is for anybody at any skill level to critisise my work, not just the pro’s or advanced users. The simplest mistake can be spotted by someone who has just started in 3D creation, that would be overlooked by more expirienced artists.

Fligh %, you’re quite right. After a couple of years here, I have forgotten what elysiun is and whom it’s for. I’ve not stopped, & hopefully never will stop, posting here, as I’m always learning how to use Blender.

Perhaps a Blenderartists section for estabilished artists would be a good idea.

My worries though have always been that no posts is bad, however in my current work enviroment no news is good news, so I should really apply that mentality to my artwork as well.

I was speaking to a few of my friends about this as well and one suggested that the work I produce is slightly on the wierd side. So when people view it, they can’t really comment because it’s either not understood or there’s no way of referencing it to a real world object/scene.

I will endeavour to post photo reference or similar resources when I post work on a new project.

A final note on updating threads. I don’t have the ability to surf the internet from home, so I have one upload a day whilst I’m at work. Most of the feedback I then get is during the next day, which is when I’m working on the project at home. So when I post the next update, I recieve all the feedback I should have had the day before.

Not the best situation but hopefully with bband arriving at home in the near future, I will be able to surf and Blend at the same time.

I’d always hoped to be able to do this, so I could do a few (un)master classes that people can follow at the same time as I’m working on them. Real time tutorials & workshops etc.

Thankyou for the replies and insight.

Most appreciative,

Tim.

Is that really possible? :-?

First and foremost I think your work is excellent Sonix.

With that being said, maybe it’s time to have a pro’s section on BlenderArtist. I think that a forum that is accessible to post on only to pre-approved members would be in order. The rest of the world would be able to view it, but only people with advanced skillsets would be able to add to this forum at any level. For instance, I’m a mediocre 3D artist at best, so until I can prove that I have a advanced skillset to the moderators, I could only be a viewer. I understand that there is a level of subjectivity involved here, but so what? I also understand that there is a extra layer of work here for all that run this website, but I believe it would help BlenderArtist and the talented/skillful to become a lot more than they are.

I don’t get much crits or comments. But then I asked if people would give crits or comments, then several people posted.
