I´ve experimented with a finite element mesh generator for generating some interesting structures.
The fist Experiment was to use a CAD model of the Earth, an mesh the surface of the land with an adaptive delaunay algorithm. I´ve imported the mesh as an .stl file, and used the wireframe modifier to make the mesh visible.
