having watched “Elephants Dream” got me started in doing some Blender stuff again after two years of absence.
As an exercise I’m trying to model Scarlett Johanssons head. It’s my first time I model a human head and in the beginning I had quite a hard time with it. So I started over three times.
Resemblance is not quite there yet and the geometry on the inside of the eye is a bit odd. I’ll have to clean that up. The oddity at the nose is only visible in the perspective view for some reason
I really like what you have done so far and it’s looking very good especially the mouth area. The only thing a find a bit strange is that you’ve gone for a different nostril construction than most people which gives a bit of a strange look on the subsurfed render. Have a look at torq’s face tutorial or mr.bombs tut in the community journal to see how they solve it, hope it helps.
Keep going with this though as I’m sure it will turn out very nice indeed.
@levi: I know torq’s face tut and I know that I did the nose a bit different. What part exactly do you think looks strange? Tha transition from nostril to the tip of the nose (sorry for my bad anatomy english)?
I just did a quick copy of your image to point what I mean about the nose, although I must say that on the last render you posted it does’nt show up as much ! I hope it helps:)
Yup,you sorted the nose out beautifully nice one!! as for the other problems you’re having I think the best thing to do is get some photo reference, getting the skull shape right without that is difficult. Keep up the good work.
Yes, the thing is, I use lots of reference pics (ones from the side are hard to find) and according to the one I use primarily for the side view, the mouth coming forward is correct but still it doesn’t seem right to me. I’ll look for some other pics.
And another update for today. Trying to shape the back of the head. It’s still quite bumpy and in no way anatomically correct but at least there are some verts. Too many verts/faces i think but you can see my lame attempts to reduce the facecount at the back. :o Still don’t know how far in perfectionism I should go there as it will all be covered by hair (if I get that working :D)
The ear is obviously missing. That’s what’ll come next. Got some good reference for that.
But still I’m quite satisfied as it gives a better impression of the whole head.
Your lips, eyes, and mouth are off to a good start, but need refinement. Finish the features of the face before you build the rest of the head. The edge of the lips should be softened. Cheekbones are to high. The edgeloops going from the front of the face towards the back should decend. It will help the shape of your face. See attachment.
You might post your photo refs and I could offer more precise feedback.
