I particularly liked the first render you posted. Very symbolic.
But, it has to be said - If you go anywhere near a speedbump with that thing, you’re really screwed.
Nice work

After these paint tests:-
I re-rendered:-
Front view coming tomorrow.
Those of you who have downloaded the Maxwell Render demo, these are my material settings for the car paint.
Sonix.
New render with improved paint and glare effect.
Sonix.
wow…that last render is so much better with just those flares!
woooooooooow!! love that caar! Only got 1 little crit. In some og the imges you posted, the wheels are very high up, in the car. That means the car can’t drive without getting the buttom crashed… nothing big love the pivture(s)
A-freaking-mazing. I would like to see an interior though.
Interior will be modeled (hopefully) depending on other current projects.
The last week or so has been spent on trying to incorporate metal flakes into the paint layers, these are some of the better results. (Earliest first, most recent last.) :-
Re-render with final material settings:-
Green with gold flakes:-
More to come as and when I can work on this.
Cheers,
Sonix.
Looking sweet dude. Nice shader work.

Sonix, you inspired me to do my first car. I downloaded the material library before I even started. You still inspire me. Nice work.
Just great. Could ye tell about how long does that renderer take to render such pictures?
awsome work Sonix, please tell me how to blender 2 maxwell (love the maxwell renderer fiddled a little in C4D)
cheers mate.
Looking forward to seeing your results.
The ones that have noise in the glass, were only rendering for 2 hrs, but the beauty renders take between 8-16hrs depending on scene complexity, materials & lighting. You can set a target sample level that the render will reach before finishing and you can set the ammount of time for it to render.
I usually set the sample level to 25 and render for 36hrs. I can stop the render at any point, or leave it for as long as I want. Some people have done week long renders before. It is dependant on how fast any noise in the image clears.
The last beauty render I posted has a caustic flare on the brick wall behind the car, from the bonnet. This is still noisy and would probably take another 6-8hrs for it to clear completely. Caustics & dispersion tend to take the most ammount of time to become noise free.
You can either export from Blender as .OBJ, .3DS, .LWO, and from memory a few others, which Maxwell can import. You will need to triangulate your mesh objects before you export them though. (Edit mode> select all> CTRL+T) Also to avoid any material errors with Maxwell, UVmap your objects before export.
Thanks for the comments,
Sonix.
i have a question:
how do you get blender files to work with maxwell?

One crit: the whole car is one big piece of metal… i dont think it would be possible to produce a car in one piece.
Very true mate, I went off on a tangent sorting out the materials.
I’ve yet to split the bonnet and engine compartment, but well spotted.
Sonix.
Is that glare part of the initial render, or is it a photoshop/gimp/firework/whatefer post process? I really like it.
No it’s a function within Maxwell once the render has finished.
You load an appature map, like a star for example, and then adjust the ammount of glare. Different appature maps give different fx.
In the same way you can add obstacle maps, to give the impression of dust/dirt/finger prints on the lens.

No modeling update, but a couple of renders I left cooking over the weekend.
Different type of paint material created by LarsSon, with Maxwell glare added after render:-

Simply incredible, Sonix. Your shader work has always been inspirational, and now you are reaching new heights through this renderer.
The render times you mentioned got me thinking about the quad cores said to be coming out in 2007. Those would really come in handy for projects like this. Also, recent talk of Intel’s Core 2 Duo in another part of this forum, and news of AMD AM2 elsewhere, all seem to offer much hope of being able to render at much higher resolutions and quality in a fraction of the time it takes today to render projects at low and medium sample settings (internally or externally as you’re doing).
As always, I eagerly look forward to more renders from you
