paint them in photoshop

apply it as new image texture, set mapping coordinates to uv, set ouptut channels to [only] Nor

because you set something in your pixar eye to cast and/or recieve shadows [the default]

Make sure the power is turned up heigh enough. It uses a higher value then blender does. And in the yafray GI tabs, make sure the emit power isnt too low. Also, area lights or sensative to distance; set the DIST high enough so that the line coming out of the square reaches to your scene, then work off that.
