Filtered lighting

I am trying to make a spot lamp interact a certain way with a mesh. The mesh basically looks like a pasta strainer, and the spot lamp is pointing down into it. I can make the light cast the right pattern onto the floor but no light actually beams from the object. I posted this question in another thread, and it was suggested that I enable the halo button. The only problem with that is the light comes down in an even cone of light instead of a speakled pattern, as it would if were really coming from the mesh. Does anyone knwo how to solve this?

You have to set the Halo step to something else than 0. The lower the better results. Then there will be a shadow in the halo.
