Final render doesn't match Composite node.

I’m practicing with Icarus and have got a good camera track. I set up two scenes, one for rendering the monkey heads and the other for the shadow-capture plane. I thought this would give me more control of the shadows rather than trying to do them along with the monkey heads in one shot.

Everything looks great in the node editor. But when I render, all I get is the two heads against the plain background (see pic.) The Composite button is selected in the Post-Production panel. Is it not possible to render two scenes together into one image?

To the right of “slot 1” in the Image Editor… is “composite” selected?

Immediately to the right of Slot 1 it says 1Render Layer and to the right of that it says Combined.

Can this be done in a single scene using multiple render layers? I tried to do that earlier and was having problems with it.

Two sort-of obvious possibilities – sorry, it’s the best I can come up with:

  1. Is “Compositing” checked in the Post-Processing section of the Render panel?
  2. Have you tried rendering a RGB image instead of RGBA (that’s superstition, but hey… you never know)?

you can do it all in one scene.
one layer holds the plane another the object, monkeys in your case, and another holds the lights.
all three have to be enabeled as scene layers.
next you need two renderlayers, one renders the objects and the lights and the other the plane and the lights.
make sure to check shadows only on the plane material and disable the sky on both renderlayers.
Then put the two together with an alpha over, then put them over your real footage.
Heres a screen:

and a .blend

hope that helps
cheers

Thanks for the input. I got it to work using Mr.Magoo’s approach. I tried doing it in one scene before, but got confused when it came to assigning things to different layer buttons.
