CONGRATZ m8. Not exactly sure what you just did but good job on figuring it out and getting it done!
when I render this file (f12) , blender crashes. using both 2.43rc1 and 2.43rc2 on windows XP.
The error is
Microsoft visual C++ runtime library
blender.exe
abnormal program termination
Anyone else experience this?

When you say connect the image output from the second z-combine to the composite and viewer nodes… isn’t it already connected in the blend you’ve posted? Am I missing something? I count four z-combine nodes, and I’m not sure what I’m supposed to change to do the initial render… At the moment, I’m only getting the green fog in the render, no monkeys (I’ve turned on all the layers to be visible).
Ah, hang on, I just realized “single” was selected on the Blank layer…

Ehhm… thanks, but I think the praise is premature… I don’t think I’ve quite caught anything yet. Working on it though. I feel sure that there’s something really interesting going on here, but I don’t yet know quite what it is…
