Finding and assigning one of many existing materials on an object with many materials

There are hundreds of materials on this object. I need to assign the material MM-Lawn-00 to just the selected faces.

The materials are not listed in alphabetical order and cannot be sorted and cannot be searched. I have to go through them one by one until I find the desired material and then click the Assign button.

There has got to be a better way to do this.

If you open the drop-down menu there and type something at the bottom, you can search or filter.

I don’t want to change any slots

I only want to assign a material to the selected faces

the material currently on the selected faces is a material used elsewhere. changing the material in the slot will change all tens of thousands of faces elsewhere on the object to use a different material. I only want to affect a hundred faces currently selected in the screenshot.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding you, but that is exactly what is possible. Select one or more faces, create a new slot, search for or filter the desired material in your list, and then assign it to the selected faces.

You have another search, sort, and filter option at the bottom of the list of slots.

I don’t want to make a new slot. That would mean 1 material used in more than 1 slot. I want to find the 1 slot that already exists that contains the material that already exists and add the currently selected faces to the face group associated with that slot that already exists.
