Hey im new to blender and this is my first modelling attempt in blender. Please all feedback and crits welcome. ps still need to learn about UV unwrapping so any good tutorials links would be appreciated

That’s actually quite good, now maybe for some eyes, maybe a better texture so you can actually tell the structures of it and it’s not just a block of yellow.

that’s very good for a first model! mine was all square but you were actually able to make it round for a first model that’s really good keep it up you should use a better texture even if you have to use an image texture it doesn’t matter.

Ok i am not sure how to get a nice edge flow around the eyes, but will post a new update later this afternoon. Also what sort of texture would work just to show the form better for now, could it also be my lighting setup…?

For now you might just want to change some of the settings for your material (before you even add a texture). It looks like you’ve changed the default colour to yellow already, but you could also change the hardness and specular (the white highlight that’s making the material look like plastic).

Then you can add a default Blender material like clouds or marble to give an organic scaly look without you having to do too much messing around if you want.

I’m getting my head round UV unwrapping at the moment too, but in Blender 2.5 it’s not that hard. Just open a UV image window and the 3D window side by side and the faces you highlight in the 3D window shoot over to the UV window too. Hit e to recalculate them (they are sometimes warped in strange ways), then shrink them down, put them where you want them and pin two vertexes, hit e to recalculate again and go back to the 3D window to highlight some more. Now every time you highlight and recalculate Blender will group the faces around the ones you already pinned.

The thing I’m not sure about is, do you need to mark seams? A lot of UV tuts say you do.

I haven’t really had time to do much work on it it yet this evening but here is how it stands so far, I have added some of the spiky things along the spine, and also played around with the texture so hopefully its more clear. Any thoughts on how to go about adding the right geometry for the eyes…?
Thanks for your comments so far
