First Completed Blender Project - Architectural UPDATE

Hi

My first blender project.

UPDATED on page 2.

that’s pretty cool. is that building overlayed over an actual photograph here? Really cool. Matches the angle really well.

I’ve tried to model my house, but haven’t finished it yet.

The integration is really well done. It is hard to say what is true or what is made with blender.
Angle and light match very well.

Many thanks, yes the building and paving is overlaid onto a photograph of the site. i only had two photo’s to choose from and this one gave the slightly better view but not ideal. I used a 2D CAD site survey drawing as the basis of the model, positioned the proposed new building on that in blender and used the corners of two existing buildings in wireframe, with the photo in the camera as a background and positioned the camera by eye to get them to line up.

about your house, keep at it, i want to do mine sometime (i’m planning an extension). I modelled this office from a 2D CAD (DXF) import of the construction drawings. I’m now using vrml v1 to import instead of DXF because DXF is such a real pain. DXF to vrml conversion done with a trial version of accutrans. excellent file converter.

edhelter:

Many thanks, the light for the model is a hdr, rendered with yafray full gi and ‘best’ although it wasn’t a bad render for a montage with just skydome. I rendered at 1280x960 2hrs. There’s no post pro I just used gimp to do the overlay. i did try the sequencer but I don’t think I rendered the alpha right with yafray because there were sort of blooms of light coming through the comp.

Hey, that’s very good. Professional looking. Lots of work involved in that.

Now I have to try that sometime.

The photograph portion looks clean. Did you touch it up? Are the clouds original, because that’s the kind of sky many architect artists go for?

Hi Spin

Thanks for your comments. The photo has had nothing done to it, it’s straight off a consumer digital camera, the sky & clouds, just a summer day nothing done.

‘architect artists’ mmm, you can probably tell from the image that there’s no artistry involved it’s just the sort of basic architectural visualisation seen from so many people using 3DMax for example. I’m new to Blender (6 months) and I feel this is a mediocre result.

I chose this small project to prove to myself that Blender was worth me pursuing to do such work, basic architectural viz from an architectual firm point of view. Taking an architects design from 2D CAD drawings into Blender, modelling it into 3D, textures, lighting etc etc in the shortest cleanest workflow with minimum time and effort. art might come later.

Thanks again.

Very minor crit, and I could be wrong about this, but judging from the shadows cast by the dumpsters, I think the building should be casting a shadow onto the cars behind it.

Otherwise, it’s very good!

thelonesoldier:

yes i think your probably right about the shadows on the cars, including maybe the bollard should be casting shadows too.

i don’t know if it’s possible too have geometry in blender that receives shadows but doesn’t render materials or the geometry?

thanks for the crit.

Yes it is possible – press the “shadow only” button for the material.

GreyBeard:

thanks for the tip, however I’m having problems finding ‘shadow only’ in 2.37a or 2.4 alpha2. I’ll have another go or maybe a bit of postpro instead.

As I am currnetly working on my first Architectural piece in blender as well, I think you have done a great job. Just wanted to pass on my kudos. I think you espically did a good job with the brick texture.

Mike

make sure you have raytraced alpha switched on

“OnlyShadow” is in the Materialbuttons -> “Mirror Transp” Panel

very nice composition, the building almost blends in perfectly on the photo.

alias_marks:

thanks for your comments. the brick texture is from www.mayang.com and it’s called varied brick (1.7mb) you can’t see from the the building but I made sure the brick coursed correctly, around window and door openings. I used one of the brick manufacturers website calculators to tell me how many bricks per 1m say in horizontal and vertical as all the window and door openings are ‘standard’ brick multiple sizes. This is only because I intend doing some close up images that would show incorrect coursing.

traitor and olaf:

thanks both very much for the help, how could i have missed it.

Hippie:

thanks for the comments. I have next to no experience with image manipulation so really didn’t do anything in the gimp. Where do you think i could improve? is it the saturation / sharpness of the model against the photo or perhaps the overly bright curb line on the front elevation?

thanks guys.

Very nice indeed. Just two comments. If you know it you can see the repetion in the brick texture and the glass should be more reflective. You can see to easily into the building

Well first, I really do think your pic is good, it’s just very clearly a model placed in a photo, so it just lacks a tiny bit of adjustment to completetly fit in.

First thing is, that the photo itself is grainier than your render, which has very nice and smooth surface (comapare your brick wall on the one on the right
edge)
And the the model is bit darker than the over all lumination of the pic, so you might want to adjust brightness a bit.

That’s what I would try out, even though I don’t have much experience in compositioning. I hope this helps a bit.

Aaltje:

yes, i agree the brick texture is too repetitive. I’m going to source an alternative or create a bigger map from it with variation.

and again yes i agree the glass would be better with more reflection.

Hippie:

Thanks for coming back with your suggestions, I’m going to work at the intergration a bit more.

And also work through all the other comments you guys have made to try and improve the image.

thanks again.

Great work.
The few bits of post pro that could help. Sharpen your background a bit, and add noise to your render. Brighten the whole shot (inc. the render). Darken concrete strip on shadow side, and car bonnets.
Do you need the dumpsters and so much foreground?
It really is a well done comp. Just a few tweaks.

Jak3:

Many thanks for your comments and tips for post pro. I’m going to give them a go. So much foreground was really to set the building in its location but I’ll look at cropping it to lose the dumpsters and some of the foreground.

thanks.
