First Face&body(nsfw) please critic

Hey all! This is my first (WIP) modeled face and first post here for that matter. Still have allot of tweaking up to do. Any advice would be helpfull.

That’s a really good first face. Excellent. Yeah, there’s some tweaking to do to clean it up, but it looks human, and even female. (you should see how many first heads don’t meet either criterion.)

Main things that stand out, aside from the bit of pinching under the eye, is the nose and the ear. The nose seems a bit straight, same width and height above the face throughout. The ear, while well done, seems to be poorly attached to the head, as if it was being pulled toward the back.

In general, you’ll get better modeling advice if you post wire images rather than renders. Use the screen shot (Ctrl+F3 takes an image from the window the mouse is in) In edit mode, with edge select mode turned on (Ctrl+Tab for the menu) and solid draw mode.

Welcome to BlenderArtists.

It’s a lot better than I was expecting from a title like ‘First Face’

Aside from the crits mentioned - any chance you can post your ref images so we can judge how close you’re getting (if that’s your intention). Since every face is different you may be spot on with your model, but without reference images we can only judge it against what we feel is our own individual ideal - which is impossible to pin down…

Good stuff !!

Orinoco, I haven’t had time yet to implement the advice you suggested, which I plan to, for I didn’t feel %100 right about the nose, and the ear as well was something I was over looking. None the less, here is a wire frame shot of what I have so far.

Gmanx, I have collected some reference pictures that I got from the Got3D website, but I chose not to use those instead opting out for rendered 3D images of other works that I got from TurboSquid.com. Yes, call me bizarre for that, but I think it’s a little to late to go back to another picture.

r-w-j, that’s not bizarre, I think it’s actually a pretty good way to start. At least you’re sure about the views, which is not always the case with photos of real people. But you are making a copy of a copy, and are sort of at the mercy of the other modelers interpretation of reality. So I wouldn’t recommend staying with it forever, but at the beginning? great idea.

I don’t have a site, but google will probably work: there is a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills who specializes in nose jobs, and posts before and after pics of noses on his web site. If you find the site, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what a pretty nose looks like.

About the topology of the model, it looks good around the eyes and mouth (two often troublesome spots.) That pinching is probably caused by two edges too close together. A shortcut to getting rid of such things is the smooth command, select the vertices or edges or faces that are pinched, and then type w, which brings up a context menu. About 2/3 down the list is a command called “smooth.” It makes minor adjustments to the angle edges intersect at.

The big topology problem I see from the wires is the lack of a face loop. This is an edge loop that runs along the hairline, down in front of the ears, along the jaw to the chin. Putting this loop in place will help you model the jaw, help fix the ear attachment, and help separate the plane of the temple from the plane of the forehead.

Do you have a side view ref pic? It looks like the chin and mouth may need to be pushed back a little (maybe the ear too?). You also need more volume at the back of the jaw - just in front of - and below - the ear.

this is your first face?? thats really good. Im really suprised, and impressed

Ok, I’ve made some changes. The nose and the bridge of the nose was reshaped allot, and I got out all the Tri’s(I think there called that) in the nose as well. The left part of the eye was pushed in more to make the brow appear the be heavyer, and I did more tweaking to the upper part of the eye that was pintching. The bottom jaw and lip was pushed back a tad, but I don’t know if it will show. Smooth up the area around the ear, as well.

Asian.monkey, This is my first head. I have dabbled with other things, I made made a pretty cool looking castle wall and gates and some Egyptian pillars and… well I think thats about it. I have dabbled in sculpting and painting and have done tons of drawings of the human form. So even though the tools are diferent, I notice it does help to have a basic feel for the shape of things before begining a project. There still so much I need to learn about blender, I just discovered the “smooth” tool half-way through my head, I don’t think I could have gotten this far without that tool. As far as texturing and aminating goes, thats a whole other world I have to explore. Good thing there is allot of great tutorials floating around.

By the way, Orinoco and Gmanx, Thanks for your advice, my model looks way better now.

No problem. Happy to help. If you switch around your ‘mirror’ and ‘sub-surf’ modifiers so that mirror is at the top of the stack, your head halves should join in the middle without any gaps or seams.

Update: Still allot of tweaking to do.

Pelvis looks way to narrow front to back. Also you should add a nudity tag to your first post title, so somebody doesn’t get in trouble at work. Look of blue noses out there. Edit your first post and change the title of the post in the “advanced” editing.

My bad, Fixed post.

Her head is disproportionately small to her body, it makes her look like a body-builder. That and she has linebacker shoulders and no hips.

OK, I agree with the sugestions and will correct when I get some free time.
Here is the Ref I am using(WARNING: Major CG nudity…its textured and even renderd)

I got the image from this tutorial. I didn’t really follow what they sugested in the tutorial, I just kinda did my own thing(oh well).

And here my model matched up with the image ref.

Thank you all for your critics. I will update when I have made the changes.
