First model: head

Hello,

I’m completely new to Blender and modeling, and would definitely like to have some feedback on my first attempt.
I followed nearly step by step BlenderCookie Jonathan Williamson’s tutorial on how to model a male head, except that I was working on a female one

Solid, with wires:

Smooth, with 2x subsurface modifier:

It took me about a week to get to this point, and I don’t really know how to fix or improve some parts I’m not happy with. Any hint would be very much appreciated.

  1. The inner corner of the eye is pushed quite far on the Y axis, compared to the nose ridge. How can I push it forward without having to make giant eyeballs ?
http://vrac.alrj.org/ba/head/th_head_front_xray.jpeg X-ray view showing the size of the eyeballs. The “tip” of the eye’s UV spheres is placed on the pupil, balls aligned on the Y axis.

  2. Outlined here with the outer corner of the eye, is there a way to make an edge sharper when using the subsurface modifier ? A round end doesn’t seem right to me.

  3. More generally, when using the subsurface modifier, the surface seems to be “pulled” inside, with vertices becoming control points. This was especially visible on the chin, making it much less pronounced that it should have been. I presume I should just decide once and for all if I’ll be working with or without the subsurface modifier ?

Thanks for your comments.

Blend file available, if it can help.

first of all nice model  secondly… i would sort out some more crucial parts before focusing on areas like the eye corners and stuff… the model looks pretty good from the front and side but when u see it from a different angle u can see that the areas above the outside of the eyes could use some work and imo the top lip needs to come out a little more…and the neck needs some work… try looking at it from the bottom (ctrl + 7) and have a look at the shape of the neck… its good that you are trying to perfect this  and for your first head model this is amazing… the topology is great  (from what i can tell) and the ears are better than i can do :stuck_out_tongue: you might want to play with the topology on the nose… this area is very hard to get right but it is possible :stuck_out_tongue:

good luck

ps… when you add a subsurf it acts vector like… so when you want to make sharp corners you can just move 2 points closer together… if that makes sense

Thanks a lot for your comments, natholas.

For the neck, I guess I was indeed looking at the front and side view, then focusing on what was catching my eye. I’ve started correcting it, especially the bottom line and where it meets the jaw.

I’m working on the top lip, now, but I’m not satisfied yet.

Regarding the ear, honestly, I had blender running on one monitor and J. Williamson’s tutorial on the other one, pausing, playing, and seeking back and forth. I followed that part step by step.

I’ll try to rework the topology on the nose. I can sort of “feel” it’s wrong, still have to understand how it is, and how to fix it

your welcome  just keep trying and update here so we can see how its coming along

With subsurf select the vertices or edges you want to reduce the smoothing on and press ctrl + e. This sets the ‘crease’ factor.

Impressive head. I’ve been too nervous to try one yet…
