I’ve had some fun with blender for about a week now, and I’m really excited about the blender application. I’ve used computers for two decades now, and probably learned and enjoyed hundreds of applications of varying complexity. Blender being one of those with a steep learning curve. Anyway, the point is that the video tutorials really got me to a flying start. So I want to praise the video tutorial creators [applause] and encourage them to create more tuts. And if you are one of those who has troubles getting into 3d apps or just want to get going fast, try them.
Also thanks go out to the community for being so helpful unto others, you also helped ‘lurking me’, severeal times already. The online manual is great too.
Now that I’ve mastered some of the basic operations, I would like to ask a few questions related to the problems/challenges/queations that have arised, and that I not yet have found a solution to in the documentation/tutorials.
I use blender 2.36 on windows.
Is there an alignment tool?
Sometimes when you model and want a cube exactly on the floor.
What is the best (your) approach to model vehicles/complex models.
I’ve not found an auto tutorial yet. Must be one
Do you create the chassis first? Half of it, then mirror it.
Do you create it from mesh or do you use nurbs, or a combination?
3 Leads from quest2. How do I cut?
ex. To cut out the front window of a car model.
Seams. How to I go about placing the window in the auto, in a good way? I know I could SHIFT F and create a face, but I want a bit more deepth to it.
Anyone know if there is a free downloadable HDRI anywhere with only the sky and the sun? (searched and searched)
I use both linux and windows. What are the main differences, using and rendering with blender, and what do you suggest, if you have tried both, then please reply.
That’s maybe a lot to ask for You don’t have to answear them all. If you know a tutorial or perhaps a doc page that I missed/skipped, then just point me to it, if you would be so kind.
BTW excuse my unrefined english. Norwegian is my first language.
The are the utilities under wizard in the scripts window (I don’t use them myself). To align an object to the floor I would select a vertex on the bottom face and move the 3d cursor to it (shift-s). Then in object mode again press center cursor. The new center of your object is now on the bottom face which makes it easy to place on the floor with either the “n” key or by snapping.

I would use a subsurfed mesh and mirror the two halves.

You delete a vertex from the interior of your mesh to leave a hole. Model the windshield separatelty with a thickness to it.

No, but I would like one as well

Subjectively – I find linux rendering slightly faster.
If you would just like precise positioning, press the N-key. But aligning objects next to eachother would require the plugin Kloputils. You can find it under Scripts Window -> Wizards. I don’t know exactly how it works, but this page should help you on your way: http://web.archive.org/web/20030215014022/usuarios.lycos.es/klopes/plugins/kloputils/kloputils.htm
(Spanish but Babelfish should do miracles)
Documentation for Kloputils can also be found in Blender: Help -> Scripts Help Browser

ex. To cut out the front window of a car model.
Press K in edit-mode and select a knife tool. After you cut out the shape, select the vertices belonging to the shape (inner vertices too) and press the Split button under the Edit buttons to create a separate mesh (for the windshield)

I’ve never used Linux, but there shouldn’t be any big differences between Linux and Windows. Blender was designed to be as cross-platform as possible.

The English of about half the board members could be defined as “unrefined” There are a lot of people here (including me) whose first language isn’t English.
This is great. I was primarily searching for skies & sun only, but these will do fine, for now. I had problems to import the added maps from the elysiun thread in to HDRshop, but the others worked fine.
