First Room

Heres a book I made real quick, I plan on placing it on a book shelf (along with others). It’s just going to be in the background but I still want it to look acceptable. One problem I have with it though is the pages. How do I make the book’s pages appear as just that, and not a big square between two covers?

I’d use loop cuts down where the pages should be then extrude inwards or outwards which ever works best to create individual page effects. Though this would be pretty poly intensive I guess.

Other than that possibly just texture or bump map it if its not going to be used for close ups.

Ok, here are some update pictures. I added a bookshelf, changed the nightstand (still not really sure on it) and created the rug. The bookshelf isn’t done, I still plan on adding a lot to fill it up.

looks nice, add THIS .it makes the room look more realistic.

I’ve been busy lately so I haven’t really gotten a lot done. But I’ve been able to work on the room a little bit and I started creating the TV area. I also messed around with the lighting and added approximate occlusion, but it adds wierd affects like you can see in the wall corner.

I’ve been kinda busy lately so I haven’t been able to do much, but heres some pictures of the progress. I know the bookshelf is still really empty and yes I’m gonna work on it :p. Up to this time I’ve only been using lighting to actually see the scene, but now I kinda want it to look nice and get a realistic lighting into the scene. So if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction it would help.

I have to agree with hobo joe, go ahead and use blender internal. If you ever do want to use the other renderers its always good to know how to pull realism out of blender internal first. It looks good so far, my only suggestion is tile the floor texture (if its not tileable you can use the texture I’ll attach) so make it bigger, and also make the bump/ normal map less intense.

Thanks a lot for the floor texture, it helps a lot. About the lighting. Yes I do plan on using BI for this project just to get a better understanding of the techniques and etc. But whats the best way to set up lighting? Right now I’m using an area light, hemi, and Approximate Occlusion, but it’s not working too well. For one, the hemi distorts metallic textures and causes them to loose their shine, as you can see in the lava lamp. How do you get the lost shadows and realistic lighting you get in Yafray and other renderers?

Heres a top view of them room so you can get a general feel for the layout.
