Decided to try my hand at sculpting, found troll references on the Web, and here it goes…
First started with a skin modifier base mesh, then worked my way through as I got a hold on the different tools.
I love it, very intuitive, my only complain is that it gets quite slow after the triangle count gets higher, but it is to be expected of a new tool, and I am sure it will get faster with time!
This is about as much time I can put on this, still needs a huge amount of work, but for a learning project I think it went well, what I got from this, besides learning the tools.
Mask brush is your friend, learn to use it, it saves huge amount of time!
Also need to get better at evaluating poly-count, as my model got very large very quickly, need to learn to block it better before going into more details.
Only at the end I got that detail size is dependent to window scale, very important for poly count manipulation.
Easy to add or remove poly density, once you get the hang of it!
Man, I love this, never been a modeler, but this will definitely change things, thank You Blender!
Now how on earth did you get his toes right? I’ve been working on a human base mesh with the skin modifier but can’t get the toes to look anything other than mangled digits. Would love to see the skin frame for that area if at all possible.
He is definitely awesome and more than I could ever do in 24 hours. Good job!
As for modeling the toes, first thing I did was to add a bit more geometry, mostly by inflating then smoothing in dynamic mode, the best way I found to do it, but maybe someone else has a better way?
Then I used clay strips brush to had the tendons and the knuckles then smoothed it, used the crease brush for the joints underneath, then it was a matter of smoothing and grabbing and playing with it, took about 5 minutes a toe, nail included.
For the nails, I used the crease, pinch and inflate brushes to create a basic nail, then I used the mask tool to mask the front of the nail, inverted the mask, then use the grab brush to pull the nail out, then using smooth and the other brushes to make it look good!
Thank you Paul. The skin frame on the foot looks a lot better than what I did. I think I tried to take them straight out instead of to the side then forward. I need to spend more time in sculpt mode learning the tools. Thanks again your blend file has been very helpful to me.
