First Walkecycle - WIP - New Anim 06/13/03

So, I have been learning armatures and trying to get some animations going.

This is my first ever walk cycle, well sort of anyway. Only one leg is moving right now and there are some speed issues, etc., that I know I have to fix.

Just looking for some feed back as to the basic movements, etc.

DivX codec (newest one), 3 sec. long.

Thanks for looking.

I think the leg straightens out a bit too early before it touches the ground.

Apart from that though, I think you’ll find it a lot easier if you animate both legs together, rather than just one. The positioning and weighting of the legs are linked to each other in real life - eg. one leg is supporting and pushing off, while the other leg is reaching forward. It’s easier to think about it when you can imagine things like “which leg is supporting the weight right now”, “what should the other leg be doing” and so on.

Thanks for the reply!

I see what you mean. This is a very early test. I will try it out later with both legs. I think you are correct that it will be easier and of course, it will look better.

Your knee keeps bending and unbending… when walking, your knee should only bend once when stepping forward, while dragging the foot. Then it straightens out once in front of the body, and the other leg repeats this process… a lot of people drag their feet, so don’t bring the leg up too high! just some thoughts

Cool, not bad at all for a first try

Your knee bending is too ‘sharp’ I mean, it occurs too suddenly.

For the rest… lets see tham walking

Hmmm, i downloaded it and it just comes up with an error when i try to watch it. So i cant comment man, but could you post a couple of still shots of the movement, i would still like to see…

Anywayz, good luck with it, puppet mastery is fun!!!

Matt

Blend on, and blend well!!!

DMBadCat: Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. I will watch the knee bending on the next pass.

S68: Thanks. Yeah, for a first pass at this, I thought it wasn’t too bad either. I know there is room for improvement. Next test will have both moving, so we’ll se if it looks better.

Bapsis: Hmm… Do you have the latest DivX Codec? I think it is 5.03, or so. Just go to www.divx.com and DL the latest one. I can’t post any stills, sorry. Stupid me did this on my laptop and I left it at home today. (/me smacks self in head repeatedly with a wet trout).

Thanks again for the feedback, it is helpful.

Here is an update.

http://mysite.reblended.com/bgdm/walk_02.avi

DivX 5.0.5 Codec required. 90 Kb in size.

Both legs moving now. Still some movement issues, but I think I am sort of getting the hang of it.

The knees seem to snap instead of moving smoothly when extending. Any thoughts on this?

Comments appreciated as well.

BgDM

Yep, i have the latest divx, dont know why it wouldnt play for me, but this last one worked fine.
Not a bad first step i reckon, would be clearer if we could see a few more steps and the legs moving forward as if pushing off from the ground. Keep it up and maybe soon try a full cartoonish body (or robotic primitive) so we can see arm and body movement as well to go with the walk.

Good job!!!

Matt

Blend on, and blend well!!!

that’s quite the strut he’s got goin’ on there… the legs sorta snap straight…

Hey, I came across this today, maybe it’ll help
